Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

Well, here we are still in Huatulco waiting for a weather window to cross the fearsome Tuhuantepec (sp?), I'm not being facitious (sp?) either, it can be a dangerous passage if you just go whenever, so we sit in a nice marina and wait. Itīs not too bad, as we have endless fresh water and electricity. It is unbelievably hot down here and we are taking cold showers 2 to 3 times a day to cool off. El Presidente came here today, but we didnīt see him as he was in the resort area south of us. Supposedly he is designating [View Full Entry]

Well, here we are in Huatulco, after 600 or so miles south from La Cruz in Banderas Bay. Itīs been a long time getting to a internet site to post our travels and photos. I hope I do our last 17 days justice, for we have done alot and seen alot. The photos will help, Iīm sure. We left Punta Mita in the morning. Not much wind at first, then we got to about 15 miles off the coast, and a nice wind off our starboard quarter kicked in, and we were sailing along at 6 knots or so. It was [View Full Entry]

October 17, 2007 Done. We chose the cheap flight - Sunwing, leaving Nov. 26 - Will there be major delays, common when going with the discounters? Vamos a ver! We will see! December 2, 2007. Sunwing was good on the way out. Only 15 minutes late, smooth flight, landed on time, and a hot meal was served! Huatulco airport - The cab from the airport is allegedly 350 pesos ($35) but we waffled and loitered and asked about busses, then started to walk toward the main road. Suddenly we were offered a ride into town for $150 pesos, ($15). Much better. [View Full Entry]

Our last stop on the Oaxacan Coast was to Las Bahias de Hautulco. Las Bahias de Huaulco is Mexico's newest big coastal development project. This stretch of coast had just one small fishing village until the 1980's, but now within its nine bays, it is thriving. It seems the Mexican government has learned from its other developments on the coasts and this, if all goes according to plan, will be both a tourist and ecological paradise, in addition to employing thousands of local people, when complete by 2020. With the help of Carlos' cousin, Paola, once again, we were fortunate enough [View Full Entry]
