Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

Well Campers, thanks for waiting it out for this blog. I have finally left the State of Puebla on a weekend adventure. Last Sunday began the 7th annual Festival internacional de Cine de Morelia. I thought it would be a great opportunity to visit some other parts of Mexico. Fernanda and I started off on Thursday afternoon after our classes. We took a short bus ride to the toll booth leaving Puebla ,which cost roughly $1, and started looking for a ride. After literally 2 or 3 minutes asking we got a ride to Mexico DF with a nice middle aged [View Full Entry]

“Que no caigan en la bajada, ni en la subida del camino. Que no encuentren obstaculos, ni detras ni delante de ellos, ni cosa que los golpee. Concedeles buenos caminos, hermosos caminos planos.” - Popol-Vuh So occasionally I wonder what am I doing here? I have my moments where I just want to reject everything about my current situation. The next day I love everything about where I am or the place that I am visiting. It is funny because Cholula has become the place that I can consider home. I was away for 8 days of 10 last week [View Full Entry]

We drove in to Tzintzuntzan, first to see the remains of the Purepecha pyramids, known as the yácatas. They are certainly not kept up in good repair for visitors and are are slowly crumbling within the confines of the wire fence surrounding them. They are all different shapes around - ovals, rectangles, and T-shaped, and were part of what used to be the ancient capitol city of of the area, which may have had as many as 35,000 people living there. We went to the small town at the bottom of the hill near the pyramids to see the two churches [View Full Entry]

I made it to the Morelia shortly after it was dark on Saturday night and took a cab to the center of the beautiful, colonial city. I found out from the taxi driver that the main street (where I wanted to go) was closed, but I didn't know why. It was apparent when I got there - there was a huge festival! People crowded everywhere and police were directing traffic while many drivers complained about the lack of parking. I made my way down the street towards the cathedral in the center of the commotion and saw a stage set up [View Full Entry]

After a lovely morning in Morelia, we headed to Pátzcuaro, planning to have lunch and walk around. Pátzcuaro is a city that fills up with many Mexican tourists on the weekends, looking to get away from the busy cities and enjoy their time in a smaller, very pretty town. There are many boutique hotels and resorts here, and it is certainly a nice place to visit. Pátzcuaro is a Purepecha indian name which means "city of stones." This region still has many Purepecha, and there is a beautiful island in the lake where many of them live. I enjoyed the view [View Full Entry]

Spring is in the air! I woke up early and went for a walk, then made my way to the patio for breakfast. I love good food, and this was something I had really been looking forward to. Breakfast was both beautiful and delicious! I started out with a plate of fresh fruits, french bread, and carrot bread, with honey, orange marmalade, and strawberry jam from the ranch, and local butter. Then add to that fresh orange juice and cafe de olla (coffee prepared with cinnamon in a clay pot). There were some wonderful egg dishes, but I asked to have [View Full Entry]

Me, on the horse!
Street view of Zitácuaro

I caught a taxi to the bus station early this morning because I knew it would be a long day of travel. Yesterday I booked a room in a small ranch hotel that was suggested to me as a relaxing place by a friend who stayed their with his family. It was my first successful business phone call in Spanish! I found out that I would need to take 2 buses to get to the ranch on the outskirts of the city of Zitácuaro, in the mountains near the border of the Estado de México. I took a bus to the [View Full Entry]

Hello guys, I've done a couple of trips since I've been back at uni, first to Tequila, the little town that produces the great drink, and the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. Tequila is this cute little old town with nothing much in it but Agave (cactus) fields and tequila processing plants. We whiled away an afternoon having lunch, wandering about the town and taking a tour through Jose Cuervo where you can see the process and taste the product. :) The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary... well... there's not much for me to say but WOW. Up the top of a mountain and surrounded [View Full Entry]
