We arrived in Barra de Navidad with no reservations and with about three hotel possibilities from the travel guide, but because of our bad experience in Colima with their recommendation, we were prepared to be a little more discriminating. However, when you are tired, and it is the end of the day, and you arrive in a strange place with no idea of where you are or where to find things, and you are carrying a large pack on your back - well, you aren’t really so discriminating. We found one place, but it looked expensive, so we moved on. We found another, and asked to see a room. It was a little run down, but clean and basic, and right on the beach which we hadn’t had before, so we took it. Unfortunately, it was ... read more

Hola!! Today was an interesting one. To start, it costs 28 bucks for a cab to the airport from my apartment in downtown Philly. I feel like I was robbed. I'm sitting in the cab, wondering to myself why the fare clock wasn't on... turns out it's a fixed fee. Note to self, never use Capital Cabs again. Regardless, I persevered and caught my flight. As soon as I boarded the plane, I instantly fell asleep. Fred, who I'm traveling with, said that I looked dead sprawled out in my seat. Haha I flew down to Dallas and Fred and I stopped in the Irish pub for a 12 noon pint. Harp really hit the spot. I had a craving for those wedge fries, and sure enough this airport pub was cool enough to have them. ... read more

Hi all, I know it´s been a while, but we´ve been on the move. We left Jocotopec about a week ago and headed to the coast by bus. Let me tell you ... it´s been quite a challenge to arrange bus trips without knowing Spanish. Tried calling the bus line - no English spoken...so we winged it and finally ended up in Manzanillo for a couple of nights. The bus´s (we used Primera Plus bus line) are really comfy and luxurious...and air conditioned. We also get a free drink and lunch with out bus ticket! On the first bus trip I ate half my sandwich (white bread, a slice of processed cheese and a skinny piece of ham)....because I was so hungry....the next trip, I made sure I wasn´t too hungry ! Jim got a sandwich ... read more

The one organized tour we took was to San Sebastian del Oeste in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidentals. The bus tour included a stop at a family-run tequila distillery “Raicilla de El Nogalito de San Sebastion“, a stop at a small coffee plantation, and then on to the town of San Sebastian The guide was very knowledgable, and was fluent in both Spanish and English. He kept us entertained with stories of the history of the area, points of interest, and pointed out birds, animals, and plants native to this area. As we drove, we passed from the jungle vegetation found at sea level on the coast into oak and pine forests as we drove higher into the mountains - to San Sebastian at almost 5,000 feet. ·First, we visited the tequila plant. Our whale watching trip was a full morning on a small fishing boat with just the 2 of us. We met the boat early, and despite the fact that they thought that we wanted to go fishing and were surprised that we wanted to go whale watching, it all turned out just fine. They had 2-way radio as well as cell phones, and after a while, got a tip from one of the other boats as to where the whales were being spotted. We motored over there as quick as we could (along with several other whale watching boats), and saw a mother and baby whale. The came up for air, and dived a number of times, then both of them breached (jumped out of the water) right in front of us! We were so close, ... read more

One day last week we went south of Puerto Vallarta to a little place called Mismaloya. It took us 3 buses to get there....about an hour or so. If you are old enough to remember Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, the story of how they fell in love and got married (not sure which time....) begins here. Richard Burton was starring in a film called "Night of the Iguana" that was set in the jungle - and the filming location was Mismaloya. They stayed in Puerto Vallarta, bought a couple of houses there, built a bridge to connect the two houses - and you can still see these houses in PV today. Anyway - we aren't allowed to go into the location of where the filming was done just outside of Mismaloya, but the little place ... read more

The Vallarta Botanical Gardens is a display of the typical plants found in the jungles of this area, and is found south of Puerto Vallarta, in the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains. The plants range from palms to cacti, and flowers such as orchids, hibiscus and bougainvillea. Actually, not much was flowering when we went, so it was mostly green, but a good representation of the area. The trip there was an adventure in itself. We had to take 4 different busses - Bucerias to PV, a bus through PV “centro”, the bus to Mismaloya, then another inland to the gardens. Along the way we saw the really big expensive houses in the hills south of PV in the area known as the Beverly Hills of Puerto Vallarta. And we also got a really nice ... read more

When we got off the plane in Puerto Vallarta Marie met us and drove us to Anna and Chrystals place - in the older part of the city. She had arranged for accomodation for us...we ended up staying 2 nites. They were most gracious and drove us all around PV to see the sights...I was definately on sensory overload! We sat on the back patio quite a bit and just drank in the beautiful trees, plants, and sounds. Oh the sounds! There was shrieking from roosters all around us - dogs barking, birds, loud Mexican music...and trucks constantly going by with loudspeakers blaring announcing things. It was really hard to sleep as the sounds died down for a bit, then the dogs and roosters would start up randomly. It's a crock that roosters only crow in ... read more

Katrina, Elizabeth and I boarded a 5 hour bus to Puerto Vallarta at 9:40am on Valentine's Day. Tages hates the beach so she decided it was best for everyone if she stayed behind. The bus station in Puerto Vallarta is far from the city so we had to take a taxi to our hotel. At first glance, we were all a little nervous about Puerto Vallarta as we passed sparkly high rise hotels, lots of tourists and everything was a little Orlando looking. Not our scene. But once we got South of Rio Cuale, the scenery changed and looked a little more our style. We stayed at a cheap hotel near the beach and ate dinner at it's attached restaurant that night. I was really excited about going to Puerto Vallarta for 2 reasons, one being ... read more

Sunday afternoon, after cooling off from our morning at the market, we hopped a bus and went into Puerto Vallarta. We walked around, taking in the sights of what is called "Old Town", and hanging out on the Malecon some more. The Malecon is the ocean front walk, and is always full of people, artists, vendors, food stands, and on Sunday there was a band. It was a nice, relaxing day, and beautiful weather too, so we really enjoyed our day. We ended the day with some tacos al pastor - my favorite - found unexpectedly at a little place at the end of the Malecon. I have included a picture, so if you ever see this roast pork on a spit like this - stop and try it! ... read more
