Acapulco ..."Oh my" .....How it has Changed
Published: November 27th 2007North America » Mexico » Guerrero » AcapulcoWe anchored in the Acapulco harbour early in the morning on the third day of the cruise. We only had a few hours there so to maximize our time we decided to take “ The City Tour plus the Cliff Divers” , ( an organized tour for $58.00 each , for 4 hours in “air-con” motor coach ….. and thank goodness for that …. it was about 90 degrees and SUNNY). Most of Acapulco is just another little Mexican city, (… mind you, there are MANY new condo developments on the go on every hillside) … but the setting is spectacular, with high blue mountains in the distance and the blue and turquoise water of the ocean. After touring the city, checking the harbor and “photo spots, we went to the El Mirador Hotel with its ... read more
The "Revolutionary Day Parade" in Zihuatanejo
Published: November 27th 2007North America » Mexico » Guerrero » ZihuatanejoThe Port of Call on our 5th day (… notice I have no idea what the actual day, or date is!! )… at least we’ve been on water for 5 days , is Zihuatanejo ( sounding like Zee want in a(long) o ….got it ? … nobody on ship did !!! ) . Actually, they called the port Zihuatanejo / Ixtapa, but we never got to see any of Ixtapa. They say it is all the large high-rise hotels down the Bay and Zihuatanejo is the village. This is the only port on our cruise that we had never been to before so we thought we might take a full city tour to get as much in as possible. When getting info about a “tour”….. the guide on board said, “Don’t take any of the taxi’s ... read more
Heading South - Caves, Silver and Non Existent Buses
Published: October 23rd 2007North America » Mexico » Guerrero » AcapulcoHello All We've been having some more fun since we spoke to you last, staying in Taxco, an old silver mining town in the mountains south of Mexico city. Highlights included browsing all the silver shops which brought out the magpie in both of us. Si was on the verge of buying a silver topped walking stick when I found him, but I reminded him he wouldn't have much use for it having forgotten to pack his tap shoes. We also had a great trip to the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, gigantic caves with thousands of years worth of build up of mineral deposits which have formed crazy shapes. It's quite hard to describe, but imagine the inside of a giant cathedral dug out of rock and you´re getting there. anyway it was super impressive, the only ... read more
The Good Life-A Reflection
Published: September 26th 2007North America » Mexico » Guerrero » ChilpancingoWe waited to finish the last entry until we arrived back in Chicago and while we are happy to he be back, it is definitely a shock to our senses. We loved every minute of our time in Mexico and now, appreciate those moments we had more so than we thought we would. The life is good in Mexico, a life we know we will return to at some point, hopefully sooner than later. Mexico is colorful, full of love and truly free for those that are willing to take the time to take it all in. Those that do will be pleasantly rewarded with the good life. To summarize our time in Mexico is impossible, but it is something that we share together and the memories will be ours forever. As we move forward with ... read more
Have just spent 2 days in a lovely little town called Taxco (tas-co). It"s built on a mountain side (lots of exhausting walks about) and it is famous for its silver. There were squillions of shops selling lovely jewellery and I"m pleased to say that I managed to avoid temptation! More yummy things to eat. I had an interesting soup yesterday which was made from chicken, with all these weird white things that I though might be some sort of cartilidge (sp?)but actually turned out to be some sort of maize or corn. Then it had half an avacado sliced on the top of it and loads of pork scratchings! Weird. My original itinery is changing quite a lot cos of all the crazy weather here. Don"t worry- I"m keeping well away from all hurricanes! Wish ... read more

We took a six hour bus to Playa Azul which was stretch of beach without tourists but with bars and hammocks. We booked a room for the day to keep our stuff and to get ready that night for the night bus. We should've stayed here for two days instead of Acapulco and I'll be saying that on the GAP assessment sheet we get at the end. The hotel rates were cheap so I don't see why it shouldn't be an option. Speaking of hotels, the hotels we've stayed at have been terrible. Seriously, I've stayed at hostels with better rooms and bathrooms than the hotels they've stuck us in. The beach at Playa Azul is beautiful. Swimming without hair and without contact lenses is the best feeling! ... read more
Decided that I needed some serious beach time, so set off from Puebla on a 6 hour bus journey to Acapulco! Buses in Mexico seem to be really good so far. This one had loads of leg room and seats that reclined way back. They also show films on tv screens. Some are in English with Spanish subtitles, but so far the ones dubbed in Spanish have been quite good as I´ve seen them in English and it helps me work out what they´re saying quite well. When I arrived it was raining, and each night here the weather has been rubbish (I´ve been awoken by downpours each night) but the days have been fab. I´ve finally got something that would pass acceptably as a sun tan, so even if there is bad weather now for ... read more
Silver Cities Tour: Acapulco
Published: September 3rd 2007North America » Mexico » Guerrero » AcapulcoToday we had a snorkelling tour but it wasn't that clear due to the recent storms. Tiffany lives in a remote town and hasn't seen the ocean since she was nine so it was worth it just to see her enjoy it. We took the courtesy bus after snorkelling to see the rich people's houses, including Sly Stallone's (whose house looks like it hasn't seen paint since the 80s). In the evening we saw the famous cliff divers at La Quebrada. They jump into the water on one side, fight the waves, climb up the cliff on the other side then dive into the water. It's pretty crowded so you have to get there early to get a good position. The divers are nuts.... read more
This morning we took a six hour bus to Acapulco. It's safe to say this town is very unattractive. Overdeveloped and outdated. We spent most of our day at a bar called 'Pescado a la Tall' which was right on the beach but also had a pool. Ludo was in Acapulco for ten days before this tour so he recommened this place. The bar owner told Sid that Ludo sure could drink. When a barman says that, it's not really a badge of honour. In the arvo we were talked into joining a party boat that sails around the harbour. We were assured it had a pool. When we paid our entry and got on the boat, we discovered the pool had been repainted and wasn't filled. We got off just in time and managed to ... read more
We took a bus from Mexico City to Taxco this morning. As soon as we got off the bus, Ludo took a swig of vodka straight from the bottle. It was 11.00am. Cheers. I bought some jewellery for mum, she likes silver so I'm in the right town. Lots of cobblestone streets and steep streets. Maybe my Cuba weight will come off with all this walking.... read more
