Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

It’s Christmas Eve and I’m in Acapulco. And I’m working much of the day. But the upside is the first part of my work day is taking teens out on a tour, so at least I’m outside and enjoying the port. Today’s teen tour took us by bus through Acapulco. The streets were so busy with everyone doing last minute holiday things and going to wherever they would spend the holiday. All the shop windows had signs for Christmas sales and some street vendors were even selling decorations. Then we headed through the country side and out to Coyuca Lagoon. We [View Full Entry]

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous?

This week our regular itinerary is switched around a bit. Usually when we’re in Acapulco, we’re there from noon until 1am. With this itinerary, it’s 6am-5pm. The regular itinerary is perfect for crew like me who work late - I can sleep in, then have a full afternoon and early evening out before having to come back to work. So today, it meant getting up early in order to get a good chunk of a day outside. A group of us met in the morning and took a taxi to a hotel/resort called Villa Vera. They allow the public to come [View Full Entry]

Today we were in the port of Zihautanejo/Ixtapa, a sort of double port. Our ship pulls into a bay and we tender ashore into Zihautanejo. But the next bay over is Ixtapa and the two cities are pretty much connected. Zihautanejo is in many ways still developing. It’s a bit rougher and it’s where many locals live. Ixtapa is very developed and is mainly lined with expensive resorts and condos. This morning a group of us hopped into a taxi and rode over to Ixtapa. The drive was interesting, seeing the change in the buildings, landscape and roads as we moved [View Full Entry]

I’m slowly starting to fall into the routine of this latest ship. Though it always takes time to feel completely settled and at ease. All of the sea days on our current itinerary are really draining, so when we finally get the break of a port day it’s tempting to just stay in bed all day! But I’ve been making myself get up and out. Yesterday we were in Acapulco and a group of us headed to the movies for an afternoon matinee. But this was no ordinary movie theatre, this was a VIP theatre and it was spectacular! We had [View Full Entry]

The Sunday after the wedding (see previous blog) we went on a bus ride to Mexico City - it was excellent, we practically had business class aeroplane seats and 2 x movies - fantastic! After a short taxi ride across town we arrived at yet another lovely hotel (Condesa Haus, I would highly recommend it) which had a four legged bath in the room, in the very pretty suburb of Condesa. Sadly we found out we were in for 3 days of (light) rain in Mexico City ... never mind. We started our first day by waiting 45mins for the Turibus, [View Full Entry]

Delfiner by night North America » Mexico » Guerrero » Acapulco

We made it to Taxco on Wednesday afternoon after yet another long drive through the winding roads, this time with lots of bathroom stops (I think I have a kidney infection). There was another futbol game with Barcelona playing this afternoon - with Silvia here, we can't miss it! We didn't have time to drive downtown to catch the game, so we found a hotel near the road, which incidentally had an amazing view overlooking the city, and watched the game there. The keys to the rental car somehow got locked inside, so Pablo spent most of the game trying to [View Full Entry]

After hours more in the car, we made it north to Acapulco. We walked the beach front near the resort hotels at sunset, as the crowds left, to see what the hype was all about. It seemed to be more of a party resort, but not as bad as Cancun. The scenery was pretty, but everyone clearing out left piles of trash all over the sand. Pablo called family friends who had a vacation home here, and voila, we had a place to stay! We stopped at the supermarket to pick up food and were happy to have a nice, clean [View Full Entry]

March 12, 09, Thaddeus and I pulled into Troncones at 5:30 in our rented Nissan, all boards accounted for. Saw a few waves breaking at the Troncones T as we pulled into the little town. A right turn took us to Casa Delfin Sonriente where we had booked a week for this, our first trip. Glen, the owner, checked us in and recommended we surf on the beach out front of the Casa for glass off and so we grabbed our boards and got wet right away. It was a little walled up but we could pull into some hollow corners [View Full Entry]
