So yesterday was interesting. Got up and had finally slept for 5 straight hours. Felt much more human! Had breakfast here in my half outside kitchen and then did homework. Tried to figure out the buses for George from Mexico City, even walked to the bus station but it didn't all make sense. Finally today my friend Ginette gave me the right information. Anyway, back to yesterday, Natalie and I went out in search of food for lunch. Went down this new street, no real yummy looking places, but saw two bones, half chewed, with fur stil on it. So gross!!! Must be from the stray dogs. Urgh.... poor dogs. Well, poor animal whatever it was. Lunch was good. Had salad finally cos they clean it in disinfectant. It felt so good to have vitamins! I ... read more
So we went to the club on Saturday, It was through a parking lot and then the armed guard brought us upstairs. to the top of the parking lot. It's an actual club. It had carpet and people were allowed to smoke and throw their butts on the the ground. So strange! But the music was good, and we were a group of about 25 so it was fun and safe. I ended up staying the longest with a girl and the "brother" of one of our friends. "brother" because he is the son her her mexican mom. It was great. I got home at 5am, and could hear the disco until 7am. It was a bit crazy. That is partly why I stayed as long as i could. The next day, Nat and I took ... read more
So I am loading some pictures of my school and of some views. It hasn't rained in a couple of days and it's super hot today. My shoes have smelt better. Must be from wearing them all the time. We all had drinks last night and are going to a club tonight, which as far as I can understand is in the parking lot under my house. The girls are all getting dolled up. It's pretty cute, but really not my thing. They tried to bring me shopping, but we didn't really accomplish it. Went to the silver market today and it was pretty cool. Saw some nice jewelry, but none for me. It was so packed and warm and full or weird smells! They sell these small yellow fruits, and they smell so bad it ... read more
No pictures today. Will have to wait until the weekend. I've been spending most of my time at school, I have class from 9-12 and then 4:30-7pm Monday to Thursdays and then Fridays I have class from 9-12 and then go to a school at the other end of the city to have English conversation with 5th and 6th graders. I am not starting this week because it's a big celebration for Mother's Day. it lasts over a couple of days. My Spanish teacher is really nice, and i have 2 classes with her, my other course is Historia de la America Latina, and it's all in Spanish. It's a bit difficult, but I'll get throught it. I haven't cooked at home, i'm still a little freaked out by the bugs and birds and whatever ate ... read more
First day is just about over. It started off with a rip in my jeans as I was getting into the car. Too bad I had packed everything except for an extra pair of jeans! The flight was super long but really good. I tried to take pictures of the mountains close to Mexico City, but not sure if it turned out ok. Met up with the group in the airport, and people are all friendly. My first meal in Mexico? Sushi! Because it was the easiest to just grab and I couldn’t be bothered to order in Spanish. The ride to Taxco took 3 hours. There was tons of traffic in the city, and once out of the city we just kept on curving and turning and going up. I’m surprised my room is not ... read more
We left Zihuatanejo Saturday morning to go to Acapulco. Acapulco was Mexico's first resort town and still serves as such. We do not really enjoy resort towns; if we did we would vacation in Florida or Missouri or maybe Hawaii. We travel to Mexico to experience the culture, the history, the nuances of everyday life, to escape the rat race of home and to survive without it. And, Acapulco is just another big city like Minneapolis, Chicago, whichever, where ever. But, it does not offer much for taking in local culture, traditions, history, customs. You can shop, eat, spend time at a hotel beach/or pool. Many people enjoy this type of vacation. We find it to be unsettling. Regardless, we went to Acapulco hoping to attend a bullfight; there's some culture and history! Many people condemn ... read more
Zihuatanejo - where the mountains meet the sea
Published: March 2nd 2012North America » Mexico » Guerrero » ZihuatanejoBuenos dias! Estamos aqui!! Que Magnifico!!! Yesterday, March 1st, we made it to MSP ontime, 430 in the morning. Our plane left on time, 630 in the morning. And, you guessed it, we made it to Zihuatanejo on time, 11am. We made it through immigration and customs without having to be searched, yay! We got our rental car, it was a manual transmission, Leila did a happy dance - love driving manuals. Chuck thought, oh boy. Chuck was right. Zihuatanejo is like Duluth on steroids! The foothills from the Sierra Madre come right to the water. The town is filled with steep, steep , steep, steep hilly roads that are vey, very, very narrow - Leila thought about crying, but perservered with Chucks support instead. Looking back, we made it to our hotel, probably, in record ... read more
Buenas Tardes from Taxco! Today I'll keep this short as this internet place...while fast has no power to speak of! I spent last night wandering the city and most of the afternoon in a bar overlooking the church!I could live here! Such a gorgeous town. The Zocalo is chock full of looking to be seen younger folks strolling casually along. Reminds me of cruising in the states minus a car! Although this town is so incredibly hilly it kills my legs! The pictures are of the church from the bar and the night shots are of downtown Taxco from the highway across from it. After my 4 hour wander last night my hotel locks its front gate at 11pm so right b4 I had 3 tacos al pastor (pork) and a 1 litre coke for 34 ... read more
My last night in DF was uneventful. Said cheery goodbyes to hostel staff and boarded a bus for Taxco at 10 am Friday. Checked into a small family run place and my view is stunning. However this hill town rolls up the sidewalks at 11pm! You have no idea how nice it is to sprawl out after a shower on your own bed alone! I cherished the serenity by indulging in a few tacos from the place across the street. Sounds odd but until you share a room with 2-5 other stinky travellers with varying snoring habits you wont realize the little niceties! So I was up early this morning after a great nights sleep and am off to ride a funnicular of sort to the very top of the mountain here. As I am short ... read more
RVing in Mexico with Raymondo y Marsia - 2012
Published: February 21st 2012North America » Mexico » Guerrero » ZihuatanejoValentines Day, Today, marks the midway point in our winter vacation. It was a relatively short drive from Playa Azul to Zihuatanejo on Sunday. There was only one spot available at El Mangler RV Park where we had spent three or four glorious days three years ago - but what to do with Ed and Michelle. While we were down here negotiating with this campground’s proprietors, they found a lovely campsite behind a home owned by Dave and Nancy from Sand Point, Idaho. This arrangement worked out well. Dave and Nancy have lived a very interesting life, too much to go into here but the RV space behind their beautiful home was perfect for Ed and Michelle’s dog Red to run and play so it was an easy decision – they stay up there – we ... read more
