Taxco & Acapulco 23rd June - 28th June 2006.
Drove about 3 hours south from Tejupilco to the Grutas de Cacahumitpa, which are huge caves at their highest point they are 80 metres high and at the lowest 20 metres. About 80 million years ago there was a river running through but an earthquake changed its direction leaving the caves. We walked about 2 km into the caves and they are just amazing with lots of stalactites and stalagmites and rock formations.
From there we went to Taxco, a really nice colonial town set in the hill side, with cobbled streets and a cool church by the main square. Taxco used to be a silver mining town but now have plenty of silver shops selling just about everything imaginable made of silver!
Stayed in Hotel Melendez, which was clean comfortable and affordable.
After a twisty 4 hours drive (check out the amazing cacti photo...) we arrived in Pie de la Cuesta, which is about 10 km west of Acapulco, a lovely quite place with a beach on one side and a lake on the other.
Drove to Acapulco to check out the city and we lucky
enough to catch a diving show at La Quebrada.....wow! Definitely worth watching.
Staying at a great little hotel called Villa Roxana, cool room with outside kitchen and lovely pool. It's very very hot at the moment and a pool is very welcome because you can't swim in the sea because of the huge waves and dangerous undercurrents. It was great to watch the the dolphins swimming up and then back down the bay not far from the beach!
