Hi Everyone! Well for having a whole week to do nothing, I certainly felt like I was busy. I did a lot of sleeping and relaxing, which was amazing. On Thursday we had a welcome party for us semester students / goodbye party for the summer students. There was lots of food and live music for us to dance to. It's definitely different without the summer students here, especially since the two boys in the house are now gone. On Friday I had my first class. This is the class that I will take with Mexican students. It is literature of Spain and Europe. July 30, 2008 . . . I managed to procure a ticket to San Miguel Allende I made it! I bought a ticket - using Spanish. I slept most of the way here, but did manage to take in a little bit of the countryside, lakes and cacti and all. When I arrived at the bus station, I was convinced I could avoid having to take another taxi, and indeed, I managed to find the place I wanted to on my own. Pasadas de las Monjas. . . a former monastery - it's beautiful- tiled shower, cross over the bed and a wonderful terrace. I walked to the main square after checking in and got lost in the excitement. Hi all! Well we caught an early bus from Zacatecas to Guanajuato. We had to get up at 4am as the lady told Rob tickets would be on sale at 4.30am. Then she refused to sell them til 5am so not sure what was going on there. We were sitting in the bus terminal feeling pretty sleepy and grumpy, right next to a donkey childrens ride (you know, the sort the kid sits on and it moves around and plays music). It kept firing up with some jingle and repeating the same phrase in Spanish every 30 seconds. I was honestly ready to go up to it and kick it or something until Rob gently led me away to some far off seats like a crazy person... Where to start? My brain is so full of everything that happened that its hard to even begin. I did a lot of stuff, and it was packed full, so I'm going to separate it into two entries, mmkay? DAY ONE: SATURDAY Got up way too early, packed, and was of course late to meet the girls. We booked it to Suburbia, got on the bus, and slept for 2 hours. We got to Guanajuato, and checked into our hotel- so nice! Alexa and I were in a room together. I unpacked my stuff and we met in the lobby for breakfast- fruit, coffee, bread, tortas, meat, eggs, etc etc. so much stuff! But expensive. cleaned me out!! Then time for a tour! We love Mexico. Arrived in Guanajuato on Monday March 24th. We were welcomed by Sigfrido and Janet, and their two sons Tzintzun and Sereno, the Aguilar-Izzo family. Sigfrido is a master of clown theater, and he and Janet are an inspiring and moving artistic force in the Guanajuato community, drawing artists, mathematicians, and established musicians into their magical circle of movement theater. We made our home base at their imaginatively constructed house on a hill in Valenciana, at an old mine, where what was once a huge water tank has been transformed into an outdoor ampitheater. Each day was filled with activities. Because Tzintzun and Sereno have been homeschooled for a number of years now, the Aguilar-Izzo family gave us a marvelous model for interactive experiential learning.
