Hola Well, I only have a few days left here in Mexico, as I head home on Friday. The time has gone by oh so quickly... The last couple weeks, I've just been relaxing and enjoying my time here, and spending lots of time with the family. Two weeks ago we had a Thanksgiving dinner for the ISA students and their families. The food was great but it just wasn't the same. But it was nice to at least celebrate the holiday. That weekend I had to say goodbye to a lot of my friends, who were leaving to travel before heading home. It was really hard to say goodbye to these people that I have spent the whole semester with, realizing that I probably won't see most of them ever again. That weekend Jesús and ... read more

Hola! Well, I am just about officially done with classes! I had my last presentation today and turned in my final essays and all I have to do is listen to an hour of presentations tomorrow and that is the end of my semester! I am so excited about that but at the same time it is a very bittersweet feeling. Even though I'm happy to be done with classes, it means I will be going home soon...and I'm not sure I'm ready to do that. Two weekends ago my parents and sister Jenna came to visit me. It was SO great to see them. I think that was the longest I had ever gone without seeing my family, and I definitely missed them. I was also so happy that they had the chance to see ... read more

Every year in October, the city of Guanajuato hosts the International Cervantes Culture Festival, named after the epic Spanish author. At venues throughout the city, residents and visitors alike can soak up the arts; ranging from music and theater to visual art. Even on a normal day, the city of Guanajuato is a very artsy place. In a way it seems like a strange divulgence for a city whose sole purpose was once mining. The silver-rich hills surrounding the city allowed it to thrive both during Spanish occupation and after Mexican independence. Today, Guanajuato is a lively university town, with over 25,000 students enrolled at the school. Another large draw for the city is tourism, as its beautifully well-preserved colonial “old town” is ranked as a UNESCO world heritage site. Interestingly enough, it is an ... read more

I did try to get a second class bus instead of a first to get from Puerto Escondido following the taxi driver in Oaxaca telling me that the ticket was expensive, but despite hiking around one mile up a hill from the first class terminal to the second class one, I ended up with a ticket with a first class company that went from the second class terminal. Although, Mexico is not as cheap as SE Asia I seem to be spending a lot more money than I did on my last trip. Guanajuato was supposed to be the destination after Mexico City before Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido came highly recommended. It is an a silver mining city that dates back to 1548 when the Spanish started mining here and sending the proceeds back home. The ... read more

Well, another week has quickly passed by. This past weekend was the celebration of Day of the Dead, which is a Mexican holiday that honors and remembers those who have passed on. I was really excited to experience it, since I had learned about it so many times in Spanish classes. But at the end of the weekend, I have to say I was a little disappointed. I actually felt like I celebrated Halloween more than I did Day of the Dead. Halloween has obviously become more popular here in Mexico, which actually made me quite sad, as it doesn't mean anything, while Day of the Dead actually has a purpose. Anyways, Friday night I went to a Halloween party with my family. My host sister and her family are part of the Lions Club, and ... read more

or from the Mummy Museum to Dia de los Muertos. Finally, to be spending a day off my aching feet! The Mummy Museum is on the opposite side of town, actually underneath the cemetery. So, to scope it out before the Muertos celebrations, we caught the bus, at the bottom of the hill. It was half empty, as is the city now that the Cervantino is over. It (the bus) groaned through the tiny streets and lurched up the hill atop of which the cemetery sits. The Mummy Museum contains the dried, leathery remains of about fifty folk, adults and children. Perhaps gruesome isn't the right word, but certainly the mind goes "tilt" after a while. Maybe part of the oddness of it all is that the text that accompanies each body is written in the ... read more

What a blessing, that there are people and cultures that are not afraid of color! Not just rich, saturated hues, but delirious combinations: red & blue, yellow & purple, green & orange. All on one house! Multiply that by a hillside collection of dwellings, and you get the sublime. These little neighborhoods and serpentine streets are awesome, a waking dream. Giotto-esque, not only for the color, but the jack-straw hodge-podge organic building of one structure upon another, nary a parallel line. A short walk down the hill there is a tree filled median where fruit and vegetable vendors set up there stands. Luscious produce grown on nearby farms. There is a lady there who has a table on which sits twenty or so plastic one-gallon containers. Each holds a different sauce (mole) or salsa. She also ... read more

Hola everyone, I don't know about all of you - but October seems like a blur to me - I honestly don't know where the time went. I now only have less than 2 months here - which is unbelievable. I was talking to a friend for a while today, and we both have very mixed emotions about leaving, but in general don't really want to think about that. It's just scary because I know that the second half will probably go by even faster. I know that part of me will be ready to go home, but it will be extremely difficult to say goodbye to my life here. Anyways...the festival here in Guanajuato ended on Sunday. I guess I didn't really notice that it was even here too many times - just because I ... read more

Oh, there are few things more exciting than to wake up somewhere you've never been before! From the songs of birds before sunrise (accompanied by the explosion of fire-works at 5 AM!) to getting lost on winding streets full of exotic smells and colorful sights. The Cervantino is not over until tonight, so the city is flooded with a wild assortment of folk, much like Mardi-Gras in Venice. Live music on every other corner till the wee hours. Life unbridled. An intimate and welcoming place, already feeling like home in less than 24 hours. ... read more

I hated to leave Guanajuato. I had such a great time here. I planned on staying here for about 4 days, but ended up extending it to 6 days....and I still had a hard time leaving. I've been here before when visiting family in Celaya, but I never stayed for more than a day. To begin, when I arrived at my hostel I immediately met some language students. They were from Australia, Germany, and Holland. The owner of the hostel also has a language school, so the hostel is also used to accommodate foreign students. First there was Samara, an Indian-born Australian. She looks Indian, but has an Australian accent. She was extremely friendly and pretty funny as well. Then there was Julia and Jenni, two German friends who are traveling together. Jenni was crazy fun ... read more
