I arrived in Mexico late Sunday night, flying over the city was like nothing I had seen before! Lights emmited an orange color as far as the eye could see. After a taxi to a downtown hostel I booked a tour to the pyramids north of town to keep me busy the next day. The hostel has a great central location close to many of the main sights and is not a bad deal at 10 bucks a night.
The pyramids at Teotihuacan were very interesting, built by the Mayans many centuries ago this place flourished for hundreds of years before being abandoned alltogether. In the early 1900's some gung ho archeologist decided dynamite would be the quickest way to uncover all the ruins. So the exterior stucco and a few layers of the pyramids have been lost forever, but one of them is still the third biggest in the world and best of all you can climb the thing.
Mexico City is suprisingly clean, the buildings are old but very well kept in the historic center. I rode the metro down to the bus station to buy an onward ticket and was impressed by how
easy it was. The bus station is spotless and has polished marble floors, can't say that about the one back home! The city used to be on the shores of a large lake which has since dried up to a small pond. Centuries ago a valley seemed a great place to build a city but it sort of keeps the pollution in these days. Wonder if they knew it would eventualy be a city of 20 million people?
Other than that I've just been wandering around downtown and checking out some sights. I met a few nice Irish lads as well as two Finish and two English girls who are starting a long round the world trip. We went out last night to a restaraunt for a few mexican drinks.
