Mexico City
Mexico City was an amazing trip. I know it has been about 2 weeks since I’ve gone but yes again I was very busy with Life.
In Mexico City we got to see alot of history. Right back to the ruins of the Mesoamericans. They didn’t give us a break. From the time we arrived we began our tour of the City, starting with the Nacional Catedral. The Catedral was actually right in front of our hostal (Yes Mom I stayed in a hostal). It was one on of the biggest and prettiest Cathedrals I have seen. After seeing the Catedral we continued on our way to the main Zocolo, which is like the city square. There were “witch doctors” doing a cleansing. It was told me that many people come there for that because it is said to bring them closer to the ancient aztecs. Mexico City was built right on top of the ruins of the Aztecs. After getting the chance to see this cleansing first hand we continued on to see the Templo Mayor, pyrmaid ruins right there in the city center. It amazed me to see to my right Aztec ruins and
to my left fairly new government buildings. The way the Mexicans have mixed the ancient with the old with the new is trully a perfected art.
We had some time at the point to go back to the hostal and relax or see more of the city. Of course we all chose to see more of the city. Our tour guide was amazing and took us to a tower where you could see ALL of the city. It was the best view I’ve seen in a while.
Let me take this opportunity to shed some Light on the hostal we stayed at. Our hostal was under the hostelling internacional umbrella and was very nice. There was a little café in the front of the hostel, and a lot of dorm rooms. Our room slept 6 people and we had a bathroom and lockers. The bathrooms were very interesting. Instead of having like knobs to turn, you pushed a button. This was to conserve water, but it made showering pretty difficult. On the top of the building which was 6 stories was a nice bar with a great great view.
Now back to the trip….. That night we
went to a Lucha Libre. The Lucha Libre was one of the coolest but most overwhelming things I have seen in my life. For those of you wondering a Lucha Libre is the title for a Mexican Wrestling Match. That night was especially important because a FAMOUS wrestler was there that night, Mystico. He wore a silver and gold mask and pretty much owned the matches.
WOW…Day 1 was incredibly long but we woke up early on Saturday morning to have a quick breakfast and begin day 2 of the tour. Day 2 was chocked full of sights. We started on our way to the Basicalla de Guadalupe. There we were able to see the old chuch, the new Church, and a true miracle. The Basicalla de Guadalupe is home to a Picture of the Virgen de Guadalupe that is said to just have appeared on a piece of fabric. It has been tested by the Church and it is found that it is a true miracle of God. We also got to see the Pope Mobile. Following this we headed to what I like to call the highlight of my trip, to the pyramids of Teotachian. It was
trully amazing. I got a little food poisoning lol but quickly recovered. Before actually climbing these ruins we had a huge lunch at a restaurant that was actually in a cave. It was one of the prettiest things I had ever seen. The pyramids were unbelievable. I still weeks later, have a tough time realizing that yes i saw and climbed the 3rd largest pyramid in the World, as well as walked on sacred Aztec land. I can’t put into words what I saw but I hope my pictures will help you see what I saw. I wish it was an experience that I could share with you all because it definately affected me in a deep way.
Following a long afternoon of hiking around ruins and old pyramids we went back into the the D.F. (short hand for Mexico City) to the Anthropolgy museum, which is home to 2 major things (1. Piedra del Sol and 2. Olmaca Head). The Piedra del Sol as pictured was once thought to be the Aztec Calendar but in reality it is actually a stone used to sacrifice gladiators. The Olmeca head is a giant head carved by the Olmecas and is
just amazing to see.
WOW WOW Day 2 was crazy, but not over. After the musuem we hung back at hostel and walked around the city. We as a group stayed up way to late chatting and playing the getting to know you game.
Day 3 was not as busy but we still woke up early and got on the way. Day 3 was especially cool for me because we visited Casa Azul. Again for those of you not up with your Mexican Art History, Casa Azul was the home of Frida and Diego (Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera). The House was great, they had all kinds of things that were used by Frida and Diego as well as a lot of original artwork and pictures taken by Frida, Diego, and Frida’s father. The last thing we did in Mexico City was visit Xochilmilco. That was way cool. It is a town that is still set up like Mexico City was when it was orignally formed. This means that it is a floating city. We traveled on bright colored boats and saw all the floating pieces of land. With out going into much detail, Mexico City is sinking
because it was literally built on water. Xochilmilco is the last area in the D.F. that is representative of how Mexico City was formed.
WOW what a trip. I have a ton of pictures but can only upload a few. Hope you all enjoy them.
P.S. Money is always accepted, as well as visitors, phone calls, and packages
