Hola Todas, So we have finally made it to Mexico. On the contrary to what people say about this place, in regards to its 'dangerousness', we actually found it to be a beautiful city rich with culture and history. There was definetly nothing boring about this place by any means with alot of music and dancing in the streets. The city is always alive with some crazy adventure :) We were lucky enough to meet up with a mate here, Bobbit. It was great to travel around the city and surrounds with a familiar face. He has already been in Mexico for 4 weeks so when it came down to speaking their language, Spanish, he was definetly our saviour.... I also think it paid off to pay attenton in school as I found my Italian came ... read more

We flew from Guatemala City to Mexico City (both respectively called just Guatemala and Mexico by the citizens of their countries), to save ourselves the 3 busses and 28 hours it would have taken to go by land. We left our hostel at 4 am at the suggestion of the front desk guy, and had 4 hours to kill before our 9:30 flight by the time we got to the airport. Excellent. By the time we got on the plane and got to Mexico, we had been up for a long time, so the first thing we did when we got to our perfectly located hostel just meters away from the second biggest public square in the world - was nap. Then yes, we ventured out and surprisingly - got vegetarian mexican food! Cauliflower tortas and ... read more

So day 5 in Mexico City. Yesterday was meant to be my last and I was due to be on a flight to Cuba in an hour but as usual plans change last minute and instead its off to Guatemala and volunteering tomorrow! Mexico City has been incredible from the moment I got here. The streets are packed, the traffics chaotic and the police sirens near constant but that just adds to what is Mexico City. I've been staying in Centro Historico which is the old downtown area of the city. It is beautiful. This is where the Presedential Palace, Metropolitan Cathedral and the Plaza de la Constitucion are located. Directly outside the hostel is a market run by indigneous people from the Oaxaco region of Mexico seeking justice for community members who have disappeared or ... read more

Up early for the taxi to the airport and managed to get some breakfast at the hotel (fortunately as no grub on the plane). Got to the airport and limped to check in, limped to queue for security and had to go into a massive backwards and forwards pre- queue before getting in the actual queue! We finally got to the front and then were allowed to go through a short cut due to my ankle. Typically we managed to end up in the slowest xray queue known to man then only to discover we had left the sun cream and insect repellent in the bloody back pack. Lost the suncream but we were allowed to keep the insect repellent??!! (we don’t want you getting malaria said the official!). My stick had to go through the ... read more

While Guanajuato has been beautiful, it’s time to move on. Thursday we packed our car and headed south to Oaxaca, stopping for a couple of days in Mexico City. I had been to Mexico City once before, albeit almost 40 years ago. I thought it would be a kick to stay in the same hotel I did when I was 14; alas probably to my old Spanish teacher’s chagrin, I could not remember the name of the hotel. I got the general area down, but that was about it. We stayed in a relatively nice hotel, the Hotel Metropol, just a stone’s throw away from the Alameda Central. We first ate lunch/dinner at La Opera Bar. Its claim to fame was that once Pancho Villa rode his horse into the cantina and shot a bullet in ... read more

Hola!! So here is the first entry from Mexico! We´ve been here for 3 days now and it has been brilliant. Got to Heathrow with some pretty crappy weather that we were very happy to leave, flight was on time. Got to Mexico city about 6:45pm local time (a good 6hrs behind!) and went through customs. This included Deano and Wilkos constant reminders to the group that Deano needed to get himself a new bag and Wilko had gotten up very early that morning so he was very tired. It took quite a while to get through customs and Wilko assured us that it was due to people not filling their migration forms in correctly, we were to discover this was true as the nice lady pointed out to Wilko that he hadn´t filled in his ... read more

: Day 1: We got a fairly cheap taxi nice and easily from the airport straight to our Hostel in the centre of Mexico City, as we were far too shattered from the flight we unpacked in our dorm and chilled out in the hostel with a couple of beers before going to bed. The hostel was in a very good central location in the city, was clean and the staff were very helpful the beds in the dorm were quite comfy but really hot. : Day 2 - "I think we look like Tourists!": When we woke up we went to breakfast then straight out to have a walk around Mexico City, we stuck out like a sore thumb, we were the only people wearing shorts and flip flops and travelling with two 6ft plus ... read more

I was watching Departures one night and beyond any words Justin, Andre, and Scott inspired me... I thought... it has been the biggest fear for me to travel on my own, especially having no set plan of where to go, how to get there and where to stay... and since I have 6 days off work... and having the chance to stretch a few more days off... this is my chance... it came to a now or never.... I decided to head down to Mexico City... Lucky enough I met a local who became a good friend from my Cabo trip last february and he had told me he would be heading down to Guanajuato around the same time I decided to head down to Mexico. It was just perfect! I do know un poquito of ... read more

Las Estacas. Finally after getting sick of the heat in the city, Mahon and I took a bus to approx 2 hours away to Yautepec, to go for a much needed swim. Hidden in the middle of nowhere, is a river called Las estacas. The water is really clean and clear (I know its clean because I haven’t shit my pants yet). It starts at a small waterfall, where you can jump in and be carried downstream by the current, and eat Mangos that fall off the trees which are everywhere. Las Estacas is a private area that charge to get in, they have blocked off part of the river so you don’t get the riff raff going in and pooping everywhere. You can hire inner tubes and float down the river, or just swim. There ... read more

Mexico city is absolutely amazing. There is so much going on. So much history, so much culture, with the added edge of being one of the worlds more dangerous cities. We stayed in a place called Hostel Amigo on Isabel La Catolica; an awesome hostel in my opinion. As soon as we walked in, an enthusiastic barman asked us where we were from and signed us up for that evenings trip to the Mexican Wrestling. Luckily we had a few hours pre-wrestling prep at the hostel bar before they shuttled us to the stadium. Mexican Wrestling involves a number of lycra clad men, girls in bikinis, ample amounts of beer, and midgets in parrot suits. How can you not have a good time? After a few hours of cheering for characters such as 'stukka', 'senor plata', ... read more
