The Templo Mayor was the main temple of the Mexica people in their capital city of Tenochtitlan, which is now Mexico City. It was dedicated simultaneously to Huitzilopochtli, god of war, and Tlaloc, god of rain and agriculture, as well as to Quetzalcoatl in his form as the wind god, Ehecatl. According to tradition, the Templo Mayor is located on the exact spot where the god Huitzilopochtli gave the Mexica people his sign that they had reached the promised land: an eagle on a nopal cactus with a snake in its mouth. The temple was sacked and destroyed by the Spanish in 1521, and the Mexico City cathedral was built in its place. The Templo Mayor was partially disassembled to be used as construction materials to create the Spanish colonial city. In 1978 electric company workers ... read more

Mexico City is very large and thus difficult to accurately describe. It’s not only the capital of Mexico and the country’s largest and most culturally important city but also the most populous city in North America, the sixth-largest metropolitan area globally, and the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world. Originally built around 1325 as Tenochtitlan on a group of islands in Lake Texcoco by the Mexica (Aztecs), it was almost completely destroyed in 1521 and subsequently redesigned and rebuilt in accordance with Spanish urban standards; as of 1585, it was officially known as Ciudad de México (Mexico City). We stayed in the Historic Center (Centro Histórico), which has a lot of the best sightseeing but is not necessarily a favorite tourist base; I noticed rave reviews for the Roma and Condesa neighborhoods, which are more upscale ... read more

Today it was to be a day to walk around and look at stuff . Given that it is the weekend the zoccolo and the streets were full of people. Vendors of all kinds , musicians , magicians , various indigenous groups drumming, dancing and smudging . There were also tarot card readers that all seemed to take seriously . There are 4 young Swedish boys here who seem quite overwhelm by it all . They have chosen to hang out on the 5 floor terrace away from the crowds . I do think it is culture shock . I went looking for and found a museum I had seen last time I was here . It is a government museum of art and It holds pieces that artists have given in lieu of taxes . ... read more

I have not gotten any notifications that my posts are being read although 11 people have read them . Please comment to let me know who is receiving them . Driving here from Morelia was painless . The senior fare for the 4 hours was 250 pesos @17 $ Canadian . It is interesting as the cab fare into the city (which took nearly an hour ) was 160 pesos and the charge for 2 days on the on/off bus today was 230 pesos. Well worth the money . Each of them . It was exciting driving into the city and starting to recognize my surroundings. It is unusual for me to revisit places as there are so many more places to see in this world but they felt like the right thing to do . ... read more

What an excitement! To be honest, I have not met anyone so far who does not have aspiration of viewing Machu Pichu at least once in life time. I recall when I used to live in Toronto in my green days, I always wanted to see Machu Pichu. Couldn’t fulfill my dream for one reason or another, but ‘a true love doesn’t die’. So when YYC travel deal announced a US$350 return to Lima from Calgary inclusive of taxes, I almost fell from my chair in the office. Wow! No, this time I had to convince Suman to come along with me…I was determined. These kind of tickets don’t survive long…there are plenty of vultures like me who just wait for such a deal. Knowing that Suman will push back as much as she could I ... read more

Its official... Bogota has now overtaken Manila in the city with the least photographs taken. the only ones were when I was in the air, and at the departure lounge! After leaving Salento we had to catch our flight from Bogota and of course.. you must visit the capital if you can! We had met lots of people who said it was rubbish.,.. and it kind of was. Very cold - about 11 daily and 4 overnight, i checked and glasgow was warmer while we were there! And not really much to see. I didnt really feel scared, but there was so many police you kind of wondered if it was only safe because of the police. We didnt do much, had a big night out, then a hangover, then just kicked about. IT was also ... read more

When Biran Tharpa described Couchsurfing as an economy of trusthe unwittingly unearthed a frame that has become increasingly apparent as our travels continued. The world is a big and there are many humans living their lives, both individually and collectively. It is no stretch of the imagination to accept that, from the mountains of Nepal to downtown San Francisco, most people are just trying to lead a happy existence. Yet during our travels there has been a single voice emanting from people across countries, a voice that transcends cultural and national boundaries yet is intimately tied to them, and that is the voice of distrust. Danger lurks just beyond the border. When explaining our onward plans to people we met and stayed with in the US, responses sometimes included warnings about the danger in Mexico. It's ... read more
