After much deliberation we decided to head to popular Agua Azul as a day trip on our own from Palenque. We caught the colectivo on 5a. Poniente Sur (Prof. Ydalio Huerta) for MXN35 (the better colectivo was MXN40). It took about an hour to get to the stop for the falls, then hopped a taxi for MXN20 down the road to the falls. During the taxi ride there were two toll booths where it cost MXN15 and MXN40 respectively to continue. These were manned by the local/indigenous population who the government had historically tried to kick off the land. It seems like they would have had ties to the Zapatistas, a militaristic group set to defend the indigenous populations rights and way of life. The falls themselves were beautiful with 4 different places to go swimming. ... read more

Another early start as we had a long day ahead. Our first stop was at a massive waterfall not far from Palenque I believe. Some of the group jumped into the lake, but I wasn’t in the mood for it, to be honest, I was feeling a bit grumpy from sleeping in the jungle for two nights. Anyway I decided to walk behind the waterfall which was pretty amazing and I ended up banging my head on a rock, so that will teach me for being grumpy! After the waterfall our next stop was Agua Azul, but before we got to Agua Azul, our mini bus got a flat tyre and we must have waited there for about an hour while our coach driver got some assistance. Local children kept checking us out and talking to ... read more

The other water features I visted were Agua Azul and Misol Ha. Misol Ha was a stunning waterfall that one could walk behind and get refreshed by the spray. Agua Azul was a series of falls that was once again set in the jungle. It was extremely dramatic due to the obvious force the river had forming the falls over huge rocks. I loved the huge trees that were groing alongside the bank, and anted to spend more time exploring the nearby jungle, but I someho acquired a friend on the bus there. A guy from Barcelone, who once he discovered I could spak some Spanish, proceded to speak nothing but. Which was fantastic practise, by very tiring. We had luch together at the side of the falls, and enjoye dth eview, though once again it ... read more

Hello to all you loyal readers! Before I start I think its worth mentioning that all your comments are well appreciated. We notice when we haven't blogged for awhile because those friendly reminders of our kin back home and around the world aren't quite so present in our lives. We love those bits and pieces that bounce back at us from these. Love! On with the story… Just over two weeks ago Natalie and I headed off on a passport stamp trip. We just love getting stamps so we decided to travel all the way to San Cristobal de las Casas , in Chiapas, Mexico. We stayed a night there and then headed even further out to Agua Azul. The journey started at 4am on a Friday morning, we squeezed into a van and headed off ... read more

The tranquil roar of rushing rapids over limestone fills my ears and penetrates deep into my core, washing away my worries and letting some calming peace flow in. Fireflies dance in the night sky as Orion creeps out from behind the jungle canopy. It's safe to say that this is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. With our hammocks strung between a couple rocks near the river, we relax, enjoying the luxury of our remote campsite at Agua Azul. Situated where the clear, turquoise river comes rushing out of a narrow steep limestone canyon, we went as far as the trail would take us. We tried hiking up the mountain side along the river, doing some real jungle trekking, climbing over jagged rocks intertwined with gnarled, twisted roots. The path eventually disseminated so ... read more

Agua Azul is about one an half hour south of Palenque, located in a vally sourended with mountains. I hope I would have spent at least night there, yet my day trip itself was full of advanture. If you get there, don't forget to walk all the way up to see the Casa de Maya. Short after my visit to Agua Azul, I left Palenque with the hope to get back one day very soon. I was recieved very well and I had the most amazing last day ever. ... read more

Up very early. 6am, the crack of dawn, luckily there was no chance of sleeping at this time anyway due to the cockerels. We had booked a tour to a few waterfalls and the ruins at Palenque. Agua Azul was the first. An beautiful river flowed creating several falls and some rapids, collecting in pools where people swam. Smaller bubbling streams joined with the main river. Where the water collected the pools reflected the sky in combinations of blues and turquoises, people bathed in the cool clear water. I hadn't bought my swimming trunks so I just had to soak up the scenery. Jungle surrounded the river, providing rich sounds and smells to the area. The squeal of some kind of giant cricket continuously reminded us that we were in the jungle the whole time. A ... read more
