Working with Esperanza

Here we go on another adventure!! About a week ago, I arrived in Tijuana (first time I crossed the border on foot and it was super easy).

For those who don't know exactly what I'm doing, a brief explanation: I'm working with a non-profit called Esperanza International for about 6 months. I have worked with them during spring break for the past three years with a group from USC and absolutely love the workers and families involved. Esperanza's main goal is self-sustaining, self-help community development. They work in 7 communities around Tijuana - helping the families to form community organizations and come up with solutions to their problems. The main task, or at least the most visible task, is building sturdy, long-lasting homes. Esperanza has volunteer groups come down throughout the year (most from the US but a few groups from Mexico) to contribute to the building process. The families work alongside the groups, children are usually running around - this builds cross-cultural relationships and is a great experience for all. Esperanza also provides seminars, work-shops, and social workers to help the communities enhance their quality of life.

So my main job as the long-term volunteer is to help the volunteer coordinator, Eduardo, in taking care of the groups which come to work and making sure they have a good time. This includes going to the worksites and building, office work, taking the groups out for evening activities.

So far, so good! Since this is already getting long, I'll write more later about details of all the exciting things I've been doing 😊

¡Aquí vamos de nuevo en otra aventura! Hace una semana, llegue a Tijuana (fue la primera vez que crucé la frontera en pie y fue muy fácil!).

Para la gente que no saben lo que estoy haciendo, una explanación corta: Estoy trabajando por seis meses con una organización sin lucrativa se llama Esperanza Internacional por seis meses. He trabajado con ellos durante Spring break por tres años con un grupo de USC… y les quiero con todo mi corazón los trabajadores y familias del programa. El objetivo principal de Esperanza es el desarrollo comunitario - para que las familias puedan ayudarles a su mismo y la comunidad pueda ser sostenible. La organización trabaja en siete comunidades en Tijuana - ayudándoles a las familias a establecer un grupo en que todos trabajan juntos para crear soluciones para vivir una vida más digna. El trabajo más visible que hace Esperanza es la construcción de casas - son de concreto para que sean resistente y duras. Hay grupos (la mayoría de los Estados Unidos pero algunos de México) de voluntarios que vienen normalmente por una semana para contribuir al proceso de construcción. La familias trabajan al lado de los grupos - es muy interesante platicar con ellos y muy divertido jugar con los niños). Se puede compartir y aprender mucho de la cultura cuando están trabajando o comiendo el almuerzo con ellos. Además, Esperanza tiene seminarios, talleres, y trabajadores sociales para ayudar las familias.

Como la voluntaria de largo plazo, el trabajo mío es ayudarle a Eduardo, el coordinador de los voluntarios - a cuidarles a los grupos y asegurar que se diviertan. Incluye hacer la construcción con ellos, trabajar en la oficina, y salir con los grupos por la noche (para hacer actividades turísticas, culturales, etc.)
