OK......so here we are on way to explore the Baja Peninsula. That is the "little finger" of land that goes south between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. We wanted to do this trip and possibly more of Mexico on our "year away" in 2010/2011. Back then it was strongly suggested to us that we not go south of the U.S border because of the drug trade issues. At that time we chose to believe that talk and ended up changing our trip plans. We are not regretful about that change but vowed then, that we would one day complete our trip and drive or motorcycle south of the U.S border. And here was our opportunity......but as "Murphys law" will have it.......we plan away and sure enough, something happens to make things just a ... read more

Renting a home in San Felipe, Mexico, has become very popular over renting hotels for several reasons. 1. San Felipe rental homes have become more popular than hotels because they offer better bargains. Many of the vacation rental homes in San Felipe are owned by Americans who bought homes during the real estate boom years and making a profit was never the primary motive for buying these homes. 2. Rental homes tend to be more spacious and give you that home away from feeling, just in a different city. 3. The best resort in San Felipe to rent a home is in Eldorado Ranch. This vacation resort has the best amenities in San Felipe including swimming pools, 18 hole golf course, tennis courts, pickle courts and lots more, all designed keep you entertain... read more

Many folks have not heard about San Felipe, it's a small town, about 30,000 residents, and is located two hours south of the California boarder. The road to San Felipe from the boarder has good signs, so it's hard to miss your way. Road condition is good, however, there are a couple of things to watch out for. - Sharp turn on highway 5 have caused many accidents, so be sure to pay attention to the signs. - Road vallies: There are 5 - 10 vallies in the road along highway 5. They are harm less as long ad you don't panic when you go through one. When the road depresses suddenly, don't start slamming on the breaks. - Road Construction: There's a 3 - 4 mile stretch of highway 5 where road construction is going ... read more

I (Steve) have been doing most of the driving on our 1200-mile south Baja sojourn. The roads for the most part are better than I expected. Some of the newer sections are smooth two-laners with speed limits of 110 kph (about 70 mph); and the rest are good two lane roads with speed limits from 60 to 80 kph (35-50mph). Of course no one follows the speed limits, so sometimes we would be going 100 kph (60mph) in an 80 zone and cars would be passing us at 120-130. Things are so wide open here that you can often see a mile or two ahead of you even on curves. The dirt roads can be really rough with lots of rocks and potholes. So far our van tires and shocks have held up remarkably well. Baja ... read more

Blog Entry 2.1.2010 Peninsula Time Large recreational vehicles (RVs) are here in Baja, but they are really in southern Arizona, I mean REALLY, thousands of them! They are snowbirds, who mostly live in the northwest and Canada, and come to the sunny Sonoran Desert in the winter. The question is, why do some feisty RV snowbirds cross the border into Mexico to spend the cold months in Baja. It's safe to say that all are sun-seekers, however, the summer here is ungodly hot and only a few hardies stay. We have met some really nice people. If you live in Baja California (BC) Mexico you are most likely: self sufficient adventurous warm-blooded resourceful creative rugged like wide open spaces do NOT shop at the mall and enjoy drinking tequila! Where we are in San Felipe, actually ... read more

Only 3 days but whew, I am now the uber riding chick… or at least I would be if I had gotten out of first gear a little more often. The destination was Bahia San Luis Gonzaga. The first ninety kilometres to Puertocitos and slightly beyond were slick new pavement. Then the road ended. I mean seriously ended. First it went from finished pavement to just a first layer clearly waiting for a finishing layer. Then the black ended, and so did the nice flat wide highway. Seven or eight big boulders painted with tar and placed across the road indicated the end, and it dropped down about 25 feet at a 25 degree slope of rough gravel to some construction roads. A bit of scouting over the facing hill and we realized the actual road, ... read more

Yeehoo, January 7th was our first full day on the bikes - and a best day ever! Cool this morning, leaving Monterey, sort of like a good summer day in Yukon. Got our first view of ocean waves, with a kid walking barefoot in the surf, then saw the sign that all motorcyclists love, the twisty black line on an orange sign with “next 75 miles” after it. Really twisty, we went along the Big Sur coast, past Esalen, surf crashing against rocks, 20mph curves after curves after curves. We were driving in an ocean fog, enough visibility for driving but not for vistas beyond a half a kilometer. About a third of the way in, just after Alicia, the curves smoothed out a bit, allowing more smooth transition and steady speed one to the other, ... read more

Holiday BeachFest The road led us back to the beach once again in late December with new and old faces from around the world. Trekkers from some of the previous treks joined up and it was a blast seeing them once more. We also had an unexpected guest who detoured by on his way back to the North Pole. So what if Santa came a couple of days late? It's the land of manana and we were still thrilled to have him out at the beach. Granted the sleigh and reindeer were missing but that's why Gus is Santa's favorite sleigh ride. No heat in the sleigh but there was tons of that on Gus the Red Bus. And the penguins and polar bears were missing but Santa, before he took off, got to see a ... read more
