I just returned from a vacation in Mexico Baja, and wanted to tell you about a glorious place to stay in Todos Santos.
It’s Casa Bentley (www.casabentleybaja.com). An extraordinarily magical spot, in the town but slightly off the main streets, Casa Bentley has enchanting rooms (only five of them, so it feels intimate, almost a private hideaway), filled with handsome, tasteful artifacts from galleries and shops in the region. The beautiful stone masonry walls are set off by thousands of inlaid semi-precious polished stones gathered by the Northwest geologist owner, Bob Bentley, who built this remarkable inn over the years (he’s been a resident of Todos Santos for a quarter century). He is charming, a man full of information and suggestions; and his manager Swiss manager is brilliantly efficient; they can book you anywhere—don’t miss the snorkeling-with-sea lions trip out of La Paz, which they’ll arrange. The rooms are fabulous, full of light, veritable mini-museums. It is a kind of marvelous dream lodge, absolutely true to the culture with touches of both high whimsy and curatorial visual enticement.
