What a difference between the west and the east coast of the Baja! We left Guerrero Negro in full leather at barely 50F, crossed 200kms of Bajan desert with vast plains of not much to see really. But then, the minute we crossed the Volcan "Las Tres Virgenes", we hit a wall of heat and amazing beauty. Protected by the high peaks of "La Giganta", the east coast of the Baja is hot and superb! The Bahia Concepcion, a huge bay with green abnd blue waters and beaches that you dream of or see in the movies. Riding along the "Mar de Cortes" (Golfo de California) takes your breath away as we exit so many curves. Parlons en de la beaute des routes et du reste, au moment ou l'on doit descendre une montagne, il est ... read more

We just returned from another week long sea kayaking trip with the Mar y Adventuras located in La Paz, Baja CA Sur. This was Joe's fifth and my second Baja kayak trip with this company. This website describes this particular trip. http://www.kayakbaja.com/trips/baja.html Five years ago we went on their "Island Hopping" kayak trip, which focused a little more on seeing different cultural sites. Once again we opted to drive to Mexico and had no problems coming or going. Although we went through a total of 15 military checkpoints and our car was searched several times, the soldiers were always friendly and polite and that made the stops less annoying. We spent the first night in our favorite hotel in El Rosario, the second in Mulegé, and the third in La Paz where we stayed at the ... read more

Finally - “the” Beach - Playa el Burro We woke up early - and suddenly by a hundred or so birds - pelicans, sea ducks and NOISY seagulls, feeding on little fish in schools along the shore - 20 feet or so from our palapa (that is a palm topped, open sided shelter from the sun). To be honest, I thought they were attacking the two food bags I had hung up on one of the palapa poles closest to the shore, it was so close. We totally relaxed into a lay about day. After Dainius took about 500 pictures of pelicans feeding. During the day we met our great neighbours -local residents who live here for six months of the year. They loaned us two beach chairs, a little table, and a cooler to keep ... read more

Well here we are in Loreto after a 6 hour bus ride across the peninsula from Guerrero Negro. We´ve decided to stay here at least 2 nights because it is BEAUTIFUL. At last! We came through more spectacular desert and the view of the Sea of Cortez as we came down a windy road was incredible. This coast is much more beautiful and more blue than the parts of the Pacific coast we saw. Loreto is a lovely little colonial Spanish town. It´s just gorgeous - full of colourful little Spanish style houses and with pretty paved streets with ficus archways. Unfortunately most of the photos of it are on my camera which I still can´t access but hopefully in a couple of days. We´re staying in a pretty decent hotel for $40US per night, so ... read more

The moments of the past do not remain still; they retain in our memory the motion which drew them towards the future, towards a future which has itself become the past, and draw us on in their train. -Marcel Proust Wow, quite a bit of time has passed since I last posted a blog. For all of you who read it regularly and keep up to date, I apologize, and while I’d like to promise all of you persistant readers that such a horrendous lapse will never again occur, the best I can do is to tell you that I will try slightly harder to keep writing in it and that I do respond to criticism so feel free to let me know in any way that you deem fit that too much time has passed ... read more

continued Jan 30 The last few days have really fused into one. Although intermittently windy, this place has been sheer magic. We've been just doing beach stuff-collecting shells, out in the boat, snorkling, reading, writing, taking pictures-just "being" in a wonderful spot. Sam and I have slept in the tent since we got here-the sky and stars have been so vivid, and close-like you could reach out and touch them. The weather has undulated from windy, calm, windy and warm, windy and cold..evenings you have to wear a jacket. Last night the wind blew so much, if I didn't have Sam as an anchor we would have been like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz! We checked out Muleje and what a beautiful oasis-when you descend into the valley, all of a sudden it gets emerald gren ... read more

We've been away from the internet, but back now so from my journal I'll update life on the road. Loreto continued Loreto was our fix of city living for a couple of nights. We stayed at the Riviera Del Mar, which was situated right downtown-in the owner's backyard literally. We were camped right beside their kitchen. Showers were clean, functioning and all tastefully decorated. There was always tons of people gathered, in this casse by the outdoor laundry room with their laptops, often talking to their kids via headphones-these retirees are right on top of the high tech stuff. We're definitely the youngsters around this place. The downtown didn't have a whole lot to offer, except a dozen tourist traps and mangy dogs-really reminds me of "Lady and the Tramp"-they all seem to know each other, ... read more

We went whale watching in San Carlos on a day that the locals said was "Loco"-this weather has been sucking !-however, we decided that we'd pretend we were on the west coast, and instead of Orcas we'd watch grey whales. We drove out to San Carlos, bundled up and went out in a panga, joined by a couple of naturalists who were attending a composium on turtles in Loreto. This is the beginning of the whale watching season, and there were a number of boats out, even though the weather was somewhat scary..but we're boating people, and this was calm for Joe compared to Prince Rupert. We did if fact see grey whales but didn't get as close to them as we may have if the weather was bit friendlier-an exciting treat nonetheless. We stayed out ... read more

Well I am a natural mountain climber I do take after my mom after all. Yesterday when we went for a walk downtown dad stopped at the visitors center and the man that ran it told him about a hike that leads to a waterfall with cave drawings it was supposed to be a feminine place where they would have their babies. the hike was almost all boulders we were walking up a dry riverbed, dad said that when they have a big rainfall the waterfall will overflow and the water will come pouring down. unfortunatley we didn't make it to the waterfall because if we really, really wanted to go we would have to do some serious climbing! after that we went for lumch at lulus and had some tacos!! we have had the best ... read more
