A jungle in the desert? Here´s Nicholas biking through the boojum cacti forest. We were really surprised by the constantly changing landscape of the desert: mountainous, then sandy, then almost green, boulder laden... And w
... [more]It was like a scene from a movie: two dusty cyclists emerging from the desert after 4 days of pedaling, greeted by a salty breeze, eyes squinting against the brilliant sun reflecting off the cresting waves of the ocean.... except unlike our moviestar counter parts, after not having been able to shower or wash our clothes, we smelled pretty foul and had a layer of dirt and sweat caked on to our skin! But you couldn´t deny our genuine smiles of relief that we had made it a week in one piece, ready for our first rest stop in Mexico.
The past week (yes it´s been exactly 1 week since we crossed the border into Mexico) has been full of hilarious and challenging moments. We´ve traveled 608 km, made it through 1 Mexican state and eaten our fair share of tortillas.
Some highlights from my journal:
Day 1:
-i knew i was in trouble when my hydration pack ran dry halfway up the first hill... i NEVER finish a full 2L before lunch, let alone in the first 20 km
-the landscape we´re biking in is so dusty and dry, that i am parched even while drinking water...
-who
´construction´site...less than 10 miles from Ensenada we arrived at a mexican construction site, which felt more like a destruction site, as nothing was being constructed, but the whole road for 5 miles was ripped to bits

Day2:
-it´s nice being on the same side of a fence as a great big dog and not being scared at all... the same 4 legged creature would have made me wet myself in fear if i was riding past, but today, was a friend/ playmate...
(more to come the next time we have internet!)
Our first night of camping in MexicoThe first day of riding was TOUGH, so I was very excited to see this random grass covered, cozy campsite (with showers!) north of Colonet (120 km and two huge hills after we left the casa del cyclista

My version of an Oasis...After hours of pedaling in the desert, baking in the 42degree heat and drinking (we carry 10L of water on us!) loads of water, we came upon this place! A cold beverage of celebration on the patio, wi

A fellow cyclist! We met Peter, a Czech cyclist, outside of the Cheese shop Oasis on day 1. Since then, we´ve been lucky enough to catch up to him several times to share a couple of laughs and stories from the road.

Us and the cacti...On the way to Catavina, surrounded by the boojum cacti forest... Thanks to Peter for taking this rare shot of the both of us in action!
Clouds! After 2 days of baking in the sun, we were greeted by fluffy white clouds on the morning of day 3.
Surviving Punta PrietaPerhaps our most memorable camping experience was amidst barrels of gasoline behind a tienda- one of three stores in what was supposed to be a decent sized town!

Dear lord. We're still in Ensenada. I can't wait to be back on the hot, dusty, under construction roads. Hope we find that Cheese Oasis... Keep going! You're doing great!
Was having a good old reminisce about BEE at the weekend and the shot of Emi fixing a flat in a BEE shirt made me smile. The Scottish winter had really set in now so I'm tremendously jealous of your trip. Keep up the good work. Maybe Emi's flats are karmic after all of Nick's spoke problems in Hokkaido!
