A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. In the beginning....... It was all about the plan.. and the dream. Its the 12 of October. I am actually sitting at work right now stuffing myself full of information in order to prepare for my trip in January. It is still a little bit intimidating at this point. This isn't just a little vacation for me this time, I'm going to drastically alter my lifestyle in order to experience a different part of the world. The funny thing right now, is that it doesn't really quite seem real. I am doing what Ive been doing for several years, working, sleeping, [View Full Entry]

Labor Day we checked out of the Abigail Hotel in Victoria and headed for the Ferry that took us from Nanaimmo to Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. The ride to Whistler was an 80-mile winding mountain road that is under construction in anticipation of the 2010 Winter Olympics. We checked into our room at the Delta Whistler Village Suites and decided to upgrade to a suite. We had very comfortable accommodations with a small kitchen-living area and separate bedroom. Whistler Village is right at the base of the mountain with fabulous shopping opportunities, many restaurants, hotels, condos and [View Full Entry]

In order to take advantage of some very unseasonal warm weather, we decided to hire a car for a couple of days and check out some of the sites of Southern Alberta Drumheller is about 130km out of Calgary and is almost certainly the Dinosaur capital of world. The town has a bit of an obsession with these prehistoric beings and is home to the Royal Tyrell Museum (one of the world’s largest dinosaur museums), the world’s largest dinosaur and a dinosaur of some form or another can be found on nearly every street corner. We didn’t see a copy of [View Full Entry]

Sorry about the delay in posting this. Partly due to the fantastic blue skies and sunshine in week two at the Villa, partly due to the travel blur that followed villa life. After our weekend away at Aveiro, Figueia da Foz, and overnight in Porto before the Douro River cruise we returned to our ‘normal’ routine at the villa 22 - 27 September. Monday morning the girls went shopping for some supplies and returned with a much needed “Mata Moscas”, translated as “killer of flies”. In other words, a simple fly swatter. Since today was mostly a relaxation an [View Full Entry]

Our Natural Colour (pre-tan)
This is at the Nichols' house, Thanksgiving Sunday.
Well, it's just 2 days until we get on our 777 to Hong Kong at 3 o'clock in the morning! This may come as a surprise, but Lindsey has already laid out her clothes, purchased all important medications, documented important information, and created at least 2 lists. Ryan has a pile of clean laundry on the bed. By the time we leave we will have had 2 lovely turkey dinners for Thanksgiving and seen a lot of our friends and family. It's only 2.5. weeks, but we're going to be half way around the world! Can't wait. [View Full Entry]

Who wouldn't let this face into their country?
So I guess my journey starts here although I so gradually began to travel that I'm not sure where to start. I packed up all my stuff on the 30th of Sept. and was out of JP on the 1st. A little late to be sure, but my landlord is very cool and realized that, despite packing all night, I still wasn't going to get out of there by midnight. It was another melancholy departure from yet another rented apt. in my life. Another chapter closes but another one will surely open. I spent a couple of day in Las Vegas [View Full Entry]
