If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

The gorgeous Okanagan Lake seen from above.
A Youth Fellowship member mentioned to me that the local wing of AMOR Ministries was planning an excursion to Tecate, Mexico. The purpose: to build houses for people. AMOR was in need of chaplains. The Project This was an ecumenical project involving all the churches of the Okanagan Valley. The Peachland group was to be led by Dave Roi, and I was to be the chaplain. There would be twelve teens in the group. Our assignment was to build a house for a man named Gilberto and his family in seven days. The Problem - Henry and L [View Full Entry]

local to big bear and mammoth. I have access to some pretty great ski resorts. Some friends and i finally make the trek to whistler. That town is a magical place. i'll give them that. also, the people there give off a great vibe. very friendly and up beat. The snow however, terrible. its all timing in a lot of resorts. and for us, we hit it at the worst time. it had rained for several days before we arrived. cleared up a bit, but nothing to make note of. Parts of the run were better fit for a hockey team [View Full Entry]

I flew from Colombo, Sri Lanka into Heathrow. My connecting flight to Toronto was only 28 hours later so I spoke for a while with a lovely lady from Canadian Airlines and she was nice enough to somehow get me onto an earlier flight on a completely different airline to Toronto. It was so sweet of her. I arrived in Toronto to be told by the captain that the ground temperature was a FREEZING minus 11!!!! Now you can imagine this was quite a shock coming from the dead of summer in Sri Lanka where temperatures were around 34, 35 and [View Full Entry]

Vieux-Quebec ("Old Town") is a U.N.E.S.CO. world heritage site. Quebec City is the only North American fortified city north of Mexico whose walls still exist. "Kebec" is the Algonquin (aboriginal NE Canadians) word for "where the river narrows". French explorer Jacques Cartier built a fort here in 1535, and then returned to France. Quebec was founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608 [View Full Entry]

Hiking in Squamish
Hiking in Squamish
Before I left Stephan and I did a hike up "The Chief" in Squamish
Today I had my first quiet moment alone with the Rockies and a rising sun. But I'm starting at the end of the story, I have to backtrack four days to the beginning. At the last moment, Monday night, Bryce - a housemate from the Crown House - decided to hitch a ride with me from Vancouver to Kelowna. This was great but limiting in the sense that I would have to only bring with me what could fit on the bike at the same time as two gerth-y guys. So forget the towel. Hell, there's no room anymore for those [View Full Entry]

DAY 7 - THURSDAY 26 AUGUST Arose at 3.30am, albeit not voluntarily. Dean drove me to the airport just after 4am, it was strange seeing little traffic on LA streets. Boarded the 6.30am American Airlines flight to Toronto, via Chicago. Sat next to a Scottish bloke who is living in LA and coaching an under-17 girls soccer team. Another example of the globalisation of sport. Got into Chicago at 12.30pm before changing planes for a 1.20pm departure to Toronto. I had been to Auckland and LA before, but not Toronto or even Canada, so I was pretty excited about the whole [View Full Entry]

Parliament Building, Ottawa
Parliament Building, Ottawa
Just feels like London.
Ottawa - la capital du Canada Finally we’re back in an English speaking territory! Arriving in Ottawa on Saturday evening, we spent the night in a University of Ottawa dorm room that serves as a hostel during summer break. Ottawa feels like London, especially around the Parliament building where the English architecture dominates the landscape and the changing guard ceremony is as colorful as the Buckingham Palace one. Other than around the Parliament complex, tourists are hardly spotted in Ottawa. Toronto Toronto is a modern city, and it feels like we are bac [View Full Entry]

Montréal: Je me souviens Montréal is great for any tourist standards. The city is nice, with integration between the old European style architecture, and the modern contemporary structures around the city. This is one of the reasons why we chose Montréal as a start point for our small reunion. Flying from Chicago, Sisca and I touched down in Montréal Dorval airport around 7pm, and tried to locate Yusuf, Johnschen and Fitria that had arrived from Baltimore two hours prior our landing. This is a French territory, as I reminded myself, as we saw many European looking people w [View Full Entry]
