A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_1uJ.html A new direction of travel, a new adventure and a new mode of transport. Having flown to Inuvik after my paddle it was time to pick up my bike and food supplies so I could start the ride south through the Yukon Territory to a town called Dawson City. This sounded easy enough, until I reached the shipping company who informed me that my bike was still sitting in the shipping yard about 1500km away. With a start like that things could only get better! While waiting for the bike to be flown in, I met up with some friends [View Full Entry]

Today I had the rest of my classes.. It began with Intermediate Financial Accounting 2. One word - AWFUL! We were given name cards to put in front of us. This meant that the lecturer could ask us a question at any point in the lecture. He started by telling us that the paper was probably the most difficult accounting paper at UBC. He then went on to talk about the paper prior to this one (Intermediate Financial Accounting 1). As I had no idea what was in that paper I felt like a complete idiot when he asked me questions. Hey! How's it going out there? Long time, no blog hey? Well, the news in the life of Charlieo is that I'm settling in to Montreal again. It's been about a year and a half since my geographic location has been so stable. The Co-op sur Genereux is bustling with bike repairs, giant pots of soup, and for me, lots of computing. Yup, despite the anti-social nature of tap tap tapping on keys, I plan to do a lot of it over the next year. Never mind that right now though; there's been lots of other cool stuff going on in [View Full Entry]

Today was the start of uni. It was also my first rostered day at Pie R Squared. I started work at 7am. We did not open until 10am and so for the first 3 hours I had to make pizzas. Some of the pizzas are crazy. We make a pizza which has sour cream on the base, then 3 baked potatoes broken up and sprinkled (clumped) all over the base, bacon and spring onion sprinkled over the potatoe and then covered in cheddar (ie extremely orange cheese!!). It is called a bacon baked potatoe pizza... and yes it is yummy!! but [View Full Entry]

And the Harbor Master Too!
Darcy was finally able to meet his life long hero Theodore. Unfortunately, Emily (the female tugboat who darcy has been sexually attracted to since a young age) was no where to be seen.
Sometimes the emotional roller coaster of life decides to give you a hell of a ride. This is the description of the ride that took place on the day of September 5, 2005. Low- After a night of drunken debauchery in which Darcy and I drank heavily at PEI National Park with some new friends from Hamilton, the next morning began shockingly early, with our tent shaking violently. Apparently one of our less roudy neighbors thought that our guitar playing from the night before was not to her liking and that it was her duty to make sure our day got [View Full Entry]

For those that have been around Fitzroy, VIC or Newton, NSW some parts of Toronto will be familiar. The area of most interest was Queen street West. This is the side of the city I got to see on the first few days in Canada. Toronto's much celebrated multi-cultural population is fairly evident, but not dramatically different to Sydney or Melbourne. I do like the Canadian accent and the smiles of many of the people who are both friendly and outgoing. With only a short time in Canada and with a keen need to see more of this country, I decided [View Full Entry]

One of our favourite places to go on sunny Bamfield days is the lovely Brady's Beach. Located on West Bamfield, getting there involves a short boat trip from Burlo Island and then a half-hour walk over to the ocean side of the peninsula. The beach is actually made up of a series of beaches separated by rocky outcrops. At low tide, it is possible to climb over these and walk a fair way along the coastline, looking out over the magnificent Barkley Sound. Quin gets to engage in his favourite activity of falling off slippery, dangerous rock faces and I get [View Full Entry]
