A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Go Leafs!

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto
It's been a while since I’ve chatted with some of you . . . so what have I been up to?? Well, it's been a great few months. A lot has happened but I have to admit I’ve been slacking on the e-mails, so I’ll give you a bit of a summary . . . From May to July I spent 3 awesome months in South East Asia with Nicole Marcotte. We had a great time touring Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Some highlights include trekking, beaching, tubing, kayaking . . . I could go on and on! Then [View Full Entry]

Beautiful Lake in the Valley of Five Lakes
Beautiful Lake in the Valley of Five Lakes
But alas, no evidence of beaver :-).
Our campground is cool. It has been taken over by elk in rut who have free reign of the grounds and emit their screeching bellows all night long, trying to woo females but, in reality, just keeping everyone awake :-). I've strapped up Quin's ankle so he able to hobble short distances now, mainly lured on by the promise of food. More trips to the bakery, haha. After checking out the job and housing scene in Jasper (which seems more promising than Banff), I went for a short walk called the Valley of Five Lakes, largely because the Lonely Planet promised [View Full Entry]

Well, by this morning, Quin's ankle had worsened to the point where he could only limp his way to the bakery and stuff himself with treats, so it looks like no more hiking for a while :-(. So I spent the day wandering Jasper town, which is much smaller than Banff and less commercial, but still suffers from an excessive number of tacky 'Canadiana' tourist shops - who buys this stuff?!? We went for an evening drive to Pyrimid and Patricia Lakes to look for moose but were foiled again. I placated Quin (who had been pretty much car-bound all day) [View Full Entry]

Last night I dreamed about a single red maple tree surrounded by green ones. I don't even know where to begin deciphering what that might mean. This morning I went down the hill to have a look at the high cross I saw there the other day. It surprised me at first, to see a Celtic Cross in this French-Canadian city, but according to my guide book, it was a gift from a parish in Ireland to commemorate the compassion shown to Irish immigrants arriving here as they fled the Famine. I learned about the famine in school (sort of, but [View Full Entry]

Hope you are not sick of me by now, but I just have to let u all know how much fun im having and how beautiful this place was. This time the place was algonquin national park, a majestic and absolutely stunning area that pretty much symbolises canada in mind. Its hard to explain to u all how amazing this place actually is, i wouldn't know where to start. First there is the crisp clean air, the flamming colours of maple forests in fall, the many beautiful lakes, the diverse wildlife (although we didn't get to see a bear......damm), the untouched [View Full Entry]

Trying to find a mountain goat
After we'd once again extracted poor Rufous from his frosty casing, we set off for another hike, this time up Parker Ridge. After a slippery climb up a half-ice/ half-snow trail (which transformed into all-mud on the way down), we made it to the summit, with stunning views of the Saskatchewan Glacier and Columbia Icefield mountains. Apparently, this hike is usually very crowded, but we had it pretty much to ourselves - so this crazy, off-season trip does have its advantages. Unfortunately, on the mountain goat front, we were denied again - despite everyone saying 'if you want to see mount [View Full Entry]

Hôtel du Parlement
Hôtel du Parlement
The National Assembly of Québec, where the provincial government meets.
My plan this morning was to go on a tour of the citadelle after a quick along the walls and past 'Hôtel du Parlement (the National Assembly of Québec). As I walked up the drive towards the Citadelle, I noticed a soldier (not unusual, because it is an active military base) and some other people who were stopping everyone who approached. It turns out, the citadelle was closed for tours today, but there were free tours of the governor general's residence (I didn't even know the governor general had a residence in Québec City) as part of an open house being [View Full Entry]

Mijn eerste groep in Canada

Meditating on his mountaintop
We saw bighorn sheep! A whole herd of them, in fact, blocking the path on our hike today. They were pretty unconcerned about me taking their photo - the ram was just sitting there serenely, chewing some grass and looking over the ledge at the incredible view. When we got up this morning, Rufous was frozen by the glacier - literally enclosed in an ice casing. We had to put the heater on for about 15 minutes before we could even turn on the wipers. Then we set off for our hike - Wilcox Pass to Tangle Creek - which is [View Full Entry]
