A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. 16 more days and I am off to explore Guatemala! This being my second "big" trip (last fall it was Thailand and Cambodia), but my first travelling solo. I have began counting down the days with much excitement, but there is a touch of nervousness as well. Not just about the being alone thing, but about this whole hurricane stan and the aftermath it has caused in Western Guatemala. After such a disaster, I have no idea how the people there are going to react to travellers like me backpacking through the area. Will they think I am a heartless foreigner? [View Full Entry]

We took this photo from on top of Silver Peak, in the Kilarney National Park. From left to right it's me, Aaron, Nicole, Vanessa, Rob, Wray, Darren and Phil's laying down.
You may have been wondering what has happened to me over the last 5-6 months since I last posted. It seems a little unfair to jam 5 and a bit months into 1 short journal but I'll try. I've been working at a summer camp called Camp Wahanowin. It's about an hour and a half north of Toronto, just outside Orillia. Camp was divided up into probably 3 main parts so I'll deal with them seperately. When we first arrived at the beginning of May, we had 2 weeks of maintainence where the entire camp had to be set up. It [View Full Entry]

1 Week!

*big sigh* One week till I leave. I can't believe its, it's so freaky. I am finally starting to get nervous about leaving. I had a nice Thanksgiving dinner last night with my family and a couple of Aunts from Toronto. I think I'm actually still full from the dinner. Mom made me my own stuffing, which was really sweet of her. Packing......well, I've packed and repacked a couple of times to get the system down pat. A combination of compression packs and rolling clothes. I'm not happy with it yet, so I think I will at least re-pack a couple [View Full Entry]

My last day in Toronto until January and it's been a good week. Saw Kaskade at Fluid this weekend and it was amazing! What a perfect way to go out on the town on my only weekend here. This past week has been catching up with people and saying goodbyes for the next few months. Have been busy cooking almost every night... I believe that I have perfected biscotti. Yum. I saw Wallace and Gromit at Paramount today with Sanford and it's totally cute. Had lunch with my roommate Marianne this morning down near Eaton Centre. Being Canadian Thanksgiving, almost everything [View Full Entry]

Happy Thanksgiving! Lounging, chatting and eating! Not much to do day... Well, being miserable outside is not very welcoming, so I pretty much stayed inside most of the day other than the quick trip over to the Tim Horton's for a bite to eat and then it was pretty much back to the TV/Common room at the hostel. While watching lots of TV, I also worked on my cross stitch. Yup, I think this is the only time I've really pulled it out and worked on it. Well, I think I may have briefly pulled it out once when I was [View Full Entry]

I picked up the 4 missing pieces of luggage today. They had to be flown up here because I was not going to wait there till they decided to show up. Out of what has been unpacked so far only 1 thing is broken. My brother and Karen departed from South africa today on their journey home. They will be landing Tuesday evening in Edmonton. Hopefully they have better luck with baggage. As the dust begins to settle on the Crazy travels and such sadness begings to set in with me. I'm not sure of the cuase. Maybe sadness of leaving [View Full Entry]

campfire nights in the Rockies
campfire nights in the Rockies

The Alaska State Ferry was great. The outside and inside looked conventional aside from the goldwallpapered, bulb covered bar, which we went to once. We took up our positions in the front cabin. Originally we had planned to sleep out on deck, in the "solarium". So called because of a few heating strips up on the ceiling. Rain and cold winds soon changed our minds and we retreated downstairs with the more sensible Alaskans. Most of our time onboard was spent reading, snoozing and wildlife watching. With persistence and the help of loudspeaker announcements by the captain we saw about 5 [View Full Entry]

Mark learning to drive on the 'wrong' side of the road!!
Hey everyone, Attached are a few photos of our quick trip up to Whistler this thanksgiving long weekend! We hired a car and headed off early Saturday morning stopping of at Horseshoe Bay, Squamish, and a few other interesting places along the way. It was a beautiful drive on a very misty, cold, drizzly morning. The road hugs the coast for much of the drive untill you head into the mountains - so the views are amazing. We mastered the skill of driving on the 'wrong' side of the road!! not easy after years of driving on the left!!! Whistler was absolutely beautiful [View Full Entry]
