A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Browsing the bookshelves Updating the blog before Night on the town. I had a morning at Hava Java drinking coffee and reading the paper with Marko. The sun was shining again today but there was a cool nip in the air. I walked around some of the shops downtown again before settling into the second hand book shop near our hostel. I must have been there for a good couple of hours just browsing the stacks and stacks of books. There were so many books I wanted to purchase but kept reminding myself that books are heavy especially since I kept [View Full Entry]

Another nice day Checking out some of the shops Chillaxing day out. Yet again sucked in by the morning TV! I have discovered that the talk show hosted by Ellen Degeneres is hilarious! She's one funny lady. Plus she had on Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and they went on for a bit about Ellen's missing "happy face" chip. Apparently a potato chip that has a happy face on it. Anyhoo, once I finally dragged myself away from the TV, my first mission was to head on over to the Post Office on the end of Water Street. Water Street has lots [View Full Entry]

Signal Hill's awesome! Watched teh mesmerizing waves Had a wicked day. The sun was shining so I took full advantage of the situation and put paying a visit up to Signal Hill at the top of the list of things to do today after grabbing a bite to eat. Out of convenience I headed across the street to Tim Horton's and had myself a chunky chicken salad sandwich, a coke and a Boston Cream donut. It was so reminiscent of my lunches with my sister when we'd head over to Save-on on our lunch break and we'd sometimes have this. Good [View Full Entry]

To Niagara

North America » Canada » Ontario » Niagara Falls
Early morning on Sunday the 9th of October we got a train for Niagara falls, it was meant to be a nine hour trip. With hindsight we probably should have looked for a greyhound bus because the train took a long way round to reach Niagara, and we probably could have got there quicker by bus. Anyway, we just wanted out of New York and as soon as the train left the station we were both feeling better. I think this helped Elaine even more, she had hated it so much in New York that just the train chugging out of [View Full Entry]

Off to Newfoundland I'm not sure what to expect Pleasantly surprised! My last day in Halifax yesterday was pretty much spent wandering the streets. I checked out some of the "Lobsters in the City" that are scattered about town. They are basically 7 feet tall fibreglass lobsters that have been creatively decorated by artisans and will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for something...to be honest, I don't think I ever found out! I also stopped by the Mary E. Black Gallery which was currently displaying "In the Margins: Works by 12 woman clay artists." One from each of the [View Full Entry]

Here are some beautiful rolling hills.
Canada celebrates its Thanksgiving a little earlier than the USA. We celebrate it on the second Sunday of the month of October. It's a peek weekend for the leaves and it is a good harvesting time. Many Thanksgiving traditions in Canada include a church service followed by a turkey dinner with all the fixins! This pas weekend we were pretty relaxed. On Saturday we went around town to the various markets and bought lots of fresh Vegetables and fruits. We then cozied up on the couch and watched a canadian tradition....Hockey is back! I made some snack and we sat and [View Full Entry]

My man...ready to go!
Typical field where we live.

Wet and soggy day Been like this for four days now. Where has the sun gone? Well, this is my last full day here in Halifax so I am going to make the most of it. I'll walk along Spring Garden Road and all the shops and eateries. Perhaps make my way to either the art gallery or the Maritime Museum and hopefully by then I won't be too much of a drowned rat. Speaking of rat, I saw a dead one in the middle of the sidewalk the other day. All stiff and laying on it's back. It was disgusting! [View Full Entry]
