A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. I guess that wherever you go in the world staying in hostels is a bit of a lottery, you'll have good and bad and standards will vary greatly. Well i have found that, the New York one was diabolical in every way. The one at Niagara was great, more like a B&B than a hostel and something we really needed after the nightmare joint in New York. However the best hostel we've stayed in, and maybe the best in the world, i don't know, was the Canadiana Backpackers Lodge in Toronto. It was easy to meet people there and form friendships [View Full Entry]

All aboard!
All aboard!
The first leg of the Cross Canada train journey.
All aboard L'Ocean! Cross CAnada train trip starts Quebec City first. I stayed at the hostel right up until check out since I didn't have any last minute errands to run. Well except to buy some snacks for the train but that could wait since the grocery store is right beside the train station. So I checked out. Got my $5 key deposit back and was on my way to the train station to check in one of my bags. Then I headed over to the Atlantic Superstore for some snax...fruit, crackers, buns, a bit of chocolate, a magazine and $20 [View Full Entry]

People

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto
Whats been really good about this experience thus far has been the people i have met. At Niagara we met a Malaysian born australian couple who we shared breakfast with. They told us that if we called them when we reached Sydney it would be a delight for them to show us around the city. They gave us their contact phone numbers for when we get there and told us to remind them that we met at Niagara falls because they will have probably forgot by then but will always be willing to show us around their beautiful city. I can't [View Full Entry]

Chad
Chad
Well Chad you were certainly teling the truth when you said that "your place needed a coat of paint but has lots of charecteur in spite of this".
The Canadian summer was a lovely affair what with the late dusks, high 20's, bbq's on chad's/"our" 12th floor balcony overlooking Lake Ontario and the city lights with a bottle of Alaxander Keiths (no v.b. or Carlton over here boys and girls) assuming the position. Chad's unit is in a leafy suburb called Mississauga pronounced "miss-iss-sar-gwar",which is situated at least 15 mins away from where all of the gang related turf war shootings happen, which is nice ! Mississauga is located in between Toronto and Brampton, 25 mins by freeway to either. Brampton has a population of 400,000 and [View Full Entry]

Niagara Falls

North America » Canada » Ontario » Niagara Falls
The first morning that we woke up in Niagara we discovered that our hostel was only five minutes walk from the falls, we had to walk through the (tacky) town to get there, but we were there quickly . The town (at least on the Canadian side) is very Blackpool-like, with some really silly attractions that re just there to make money. However the falls are great and on the first day we went on the Maid of the Mist boat ride. We both really enjoyed this. Afterward we went for a drink and Elaine got really upset, she said she [View Full Entry]

One more sleep

North America » Canada » Ontario » London
as Johanne so eloquently puts it. It's wierd, I'm not excited yet. I mean I am but I've been running around trying to make sure I have everything (including 2 Sars/Chicken Flu masks). I'm dead tired, I have big bags under my eyes. I want this trip to finally begin so I can leave behind trying to teach my Dad how to use the internet, which is quite commical in itself to those of you who know my Dad. You plan for this trip for some time, and when it comes down to the wire, you're running around like a chicken [View Full Entry]

Gusty winds and rain My clothes become a wet sponge Time to leave St. John's! I heard the rain starting to pound against my window as I was falling asleep last night. I awoke to hear it pelting against the window. I had a look outside and boy did it look gross out there. You could see the rains being blown every which way. There were huge rivers and lakes and pools of water forming everywhere. There weren't too many people out there braving the elements that's for sure and the few I did see were all decked out in full [View Full Entry]
