A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. So far the highlight of my visit in Vancouver has been the unexpected reunion tour of the very early Eighties dark rock band "Bauhaus". Yes, it beats the highlight of maybe being shot as an extra in a new Al Pacino Movie that's being shot outside my hostel!! And it even beats (hands down) the thrill of plane take-offs and landings!! If you want more info about Bauhaus before continuing then read this. Be sure to come back though! "Near The Atmosphere" is the name of the tour, and it was marketed as "A night with Bauhaus". Walk up Mont Royal Sun shines and the air is crisp Lovely views up there. I saw the sun peeking through the windows and was excited to see that the nice weather is still with us. It's a perfect day to go for a nice uphill trek to Mont Royal. I believe it is one of the must see places when in Montreal. My Korean roommate kept pushing bagels on me. She bought a dozen and then realized she bought too many and didn't want to lug them all the way to Ottawa with her the next few days. So it [View Full Entry]

It must be fall...

ok so its been a while....back at school. its a bitch. i have very little free time, yet the free time i have i try to have a little fun... so about 2 weeks ago, my friends coogan and gordo came from edmonton to visit, as well as my friends corey and mike from banff. i welcomed them with 4 kegs on ice. the entire week was ridiculous, as we finished those kegs in 6 days. one off those days started with a glass of wine to take the hangover off, which turned into a bottle.... which turned into tapping another [View Full Entry]

Off to Montréal The weather has cleared up some Excellent! Allons! I'm not sure if I just wrote down the right word in French for "let's go" but oh well...it fits in with the haiku. haha Just a quick hello from me. I can't believe that I've made it to Montréal already...in fact I arrived only a few hours ago! I happened across this internet place that seemed quite reasonable especially in comparison to the $6/hour I've been encountering. This isn't free but it sure does seem "bargainous" in comparison. Anyhoo, I plan on spending the weekend here in Montréal before [View Full Entry]

Toronto

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto
Toronto is a nice city, its a fairly slow paced city compared to many others and theres no shortage of things to do there. Whats weird about it though is the fact that people from all over the world go there in order to see (wait for it) a TV aerial, yes thats right. The CN Tower ("the worlds tallest free standing structure" in the world as every advertisement for it says, though i already knew that - thanks Len) is the main tourist attraction and it was great to go up it, the highlight being the glass floor which i [View Full Entry]

Trip to the "Musee" I escaped outside the walls! Beautiful City! The day started out with some gray weather that surprisingly turned sunny for a little bit. So I decided to take a little walk around the streets outside of the Old Walled City of Québec towards the Musee du Québec in the Western part of the City near the infamous battlefields where Wolfe and Montcalm died in I think the 1700's sometime. There are so many funky and trendy shops and cafes along rue St. Jean. I couldn't help but pop into a few along the way and did a [View Full Entry]

It's past midnight lady! 02:00 Rolling! Hey is the old guy across fro me sleeping on the floor? 03:57 I have no idea where we just stopped. Riviere-du-loop. Kilometre 907 is my guess. 02:32...that's the time we were supposed to have arrived here. 06:48 Charnay in 15! Kilometre 1099! 07:03 Train is backing up to change tracks. 07:15 Leave the train. Pausing to take a picture.
Amazing Fresque.

I guess that wherever you go in the world staying in hostels is a bit of a lottery, you'll have good and bad and standards will vary greatly. Well i have found that, the New York one was diabolical in every way. The one at Niagara was great, more like a B&B than a hostel and something we really needed after the nightmare joint in New York. However the best hostel we've stayed in, and maybe the best in the world, i don't know, was the Canadiana Backpackers Lodge in Toronto. It was easy to meet people there and form friendships [View Full Entry]
