A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Halloween
Halloween
My greek outfit
Thought that I should do a bit of an update: HALLOWEEN I went to the Law School Halloween party. All of the NZ girls and some others dressed up as Greek Godesses. We had pre party nibbls and drinks at Kendalls and then headed to the party. Unfortunately the party got cancelled at midnight as an Irish exchange student who has a broken leg got pushed through this huge glass window and there wqas glass everywhere. So that was a bit of a bummer.. The pre party drinks were the funnest part of the whole night. Dressing up was really fun [View Full Entry]

Lake Louise and beyond

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff
During the first few days in Banff we hired a car. This was a new thing for me because i have never driven in a foreign country before and never on the right side of the road. The first day i was extremely nervous and drove pretty slowly throughout the day, it was notable however that the other drivers tended to be extremely courteous, very different from the UK. On this day we drove to the nearby town of Canmore which is very similar to Banff, though it is located just outside of the national park. This was fine for a [View Full Entry]

The CN Tower
The CN Tower
I didn't take many photos while in Toronto.
Great day of walking A couple of blonde moments Feet gonna fall off? I woke up this morning and thought to myself. "I should check my train ticket to see what time I take off tomorrow." Well, I looked at my ticket and had to take a double take (since the light in wasn't yet turned on in our room.) I was supposed to be on the train in exactly 2 minutes! What! I'm not sure why I kept thinking I was leaving for Niagara Falls on the 29th - Saturday. Then I checked my ticket where it clearly stated the [View Full Entry]

Hot water

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff
The first significant attraction that we checked out in the Rockies was the Hot Springs located u Sulphur Mountain. This is a spa pool that uses the naturally hot spring water from up the mountain. It is located in a position where you have mountain views all around, and it is an outside pool despite the fact that it can be very cold up there. The water temperature is 40 degrees C and so it is very hot. It is reccommended that one does not stay in there for more than 20 minutes at a time, but it was clear that [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Canada with a $200 fine above my head. For anyone planning to bring an apple into the country anytime soon, apparantly it's not a good idea. Fortunately my British charm and wit saw me through - "You can't bring that into the country." "Haha, oh well - you could have it for your lunch if you like." "No, we have to incinerate it." "Oh". A good start, I hastened through customs being let off the fine, to find Danielle waiting in the crowd at arrivals. It was great to see her again. In fact, it's been wonderful to [View Full Entry]

Happy Halloween!
The Big Apple

Today, Toronto. Only here a couple of days. I've been here before. I didn't have the best nights sleep since there were some pretty noisy young girls on our floor. I think it may have been their first trip away or something. It seemed like they were in high school which begs the question, "Where the hell is the person in charge of looking after you??" Oh well, I listened to my music for a while and eventually fell asleep. It wasn't too early of a start for me since I had most of my stuff packed up already. Quick check [View Full Entry]

It's now been a little bit more than a week since I learned that in about 3 months, I'll be leaving for Sydney, Australia to study for my very last semester. I am so excited about this, I think I'm almost happier than when I learned I got accepted to all the universities I had applied to 4 years ago. There are so many things left to do. Get my visa, my plane ticket, find a place to live, register to my classes, figure out the whole inssurance thing and probably other things I don't of right now that will simply [View Full Entry]

Currently I am sitting in my office trying not to notice the how depressingly small my space is here. Humans were not meant to be confined like this, perched in an uncomfortable office chair, surrounded by the pseudo-walls of my cubicle, illuminated only by the soul-draining glow of the florescent tubes mere feet above my head and the flickering screen of my computer... I depart soon - my flight leaves on November 25th at 10:45 p.m. from Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and I land in Sydney, Australia on November 27th at 9:40 p.m. - and let me let [View Full Entry]

Last day in Ottawa Walked over to Gatineau Took lots of pictures. Another cool one Went to the Museum of Civilization. Kish asked if it would be okay if she could join me for the day. I only had the Museum of Civilization on my list of things to see today. Sure, it'd be nice to have some company. So we took our time having something for breakfast and then went back to our cell to bundle up. In no time we were soon on our way and out the door. We walked through the Byward Market area and past the [View Full Entry]

Plan B, it's raining Parliament and museums My legs are all wet. As forecasted by the weather people the rains are here today. But I didn't let that stop me from going out and seeing some of the sights of Ottawa. Good thing for me most attractions in Ottawa are pretty close and are all walkable and the rains really aren't that heavy. First stop in the morning is to the Parliament Buildings and a guided tour. I had to wait about half an hour but that's okay. They had a display on "Your Parliamentarians at Work" and it explained some [View Full Entry]
