A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. During our time in Banff the Banff Mountain Film festival was occurring, this gave us an opportunity to go and see some of the movies that were showing there. The most notable one that we saw was a film from Bhutan called "Travellers and Magicians", it was a story of a man who lives in Bhutan who has to make a journey across the country and during this journey he meets other travellers, one of whom is a tibetan monk who tells him a story. The film flits between the story and the reality of their journey and the journey they [View Full Entry]

Is it trick or treat? A treat equals a snack, so Treat it is! Thank you! Hey folks! I was able to wake up bright and early this morning in order to catch my 06:45 train back to Toronto. It wasn't so bad though. I was up at 6. Washed up. Stripped the linen from my bed. Left my key at the reception desk. Then it was out the back door. Quick walk to the train station and I was there by 06:17. Plenty of time. I even had to wait to board the train but that's okay since it's never [View Full Entry]

Rainbow Lake Trail Head
Rainbow Lake Trail Head
The beginning of the trail leading up to Rainbow Lake - near Whistler, BC
After returning to my car from this recent enlightening experience (as outlined in "Alone in the forest...?") I was determined... to do it again!! I drove up to Whistler and bought a map of the nearby hiking trails. Once again I was met with a little surprise at the time of year I had chosen to partake in this activity. However this time the guy was more understanding, and even offered a couple of useful route suggestions. By the way, I hope all you Aussies appreciate the effort I am putting in bolstering the image of the hardy (or was that [View Full Entry]

Mountain walk

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff
Hiking has been a big part of what we have done in the Rockies, but the most memorable hike of all was the walk we took up Sulphur Mountain on a very snowy day. Sulphur Mountain is probably not one of the biggest mountains in Banff, but its meant to take 2 to 5 hours to negotiate the path all the way up (and down) and on a day as snowy as this one it was even harder. We began around 12.20pm and at first were really determined to make it up, but the more we climbed the harder and harder [View Full Entry]

As darkness set in I was a great deal more at home and relaxed than I was the previous evening. I don't know what the reason was - I was still on an unfamiliar, thickly forested mountain trail, after dark, well and truly in bear country (they have bear-proof garbage bins everywhere, including Whistler town!!), about 8km from the car, and still alone, etc, etc. But something was different. I was happy at least. I pitched the tent and unpacked my sleeping bag - something you shouldn't do in the tropics for fear of it filling up with crawlies, but something [View Full Entry]

Day three-oh-seven It's Eve of All Hallow's Eve Time for some chocolate! I happened to look in my calendar today and noticed I've been travelling about for three hundred and seven days now. I've been away from home so long, or rather I've been travelling around for so long now that I'm just used to being on the road. I can't believe it's been 10 months. I guess you could say the days are beginning to meld into one. Ahh! Yup, everyday is a Saturday. haha I remember those first few days in Tam Ky when we were just sort of [View Full Entry]

That
One of 10,000 Buddha

Someone once said that every day you should do something to scare yourself. I thought "yeah, I rock climb, I go canyoning, abseiling, blah blah". But as of a couple of days ago I think I really know what that person was talking about. It's not necessarily the act of giving yourself a fright that counts - although it certainly gets the heart pumping (I counted 150bpm at one point). It's what your mind does in this time - what you think about. The scare could be (hypothetically speaking, of course) finding yourself along an unfamiliar thickly forested mountain trail. After [View Full Entry]

Percy the superhero

Ah-ha this is my most interesting diary entry so far and one in which i learned something... Ok, recently we decided to go for a hike along the Bow River, a fairly thin but very long river than runs through the national park. While we were doing this we noted that part of the walk was way above the river (about 60 feet), it was more like a path at the top of a cliff than anything else. Part of the path was harder to walk on than another part and when walking on the latter it felt very unsafe as [View Full Entry]

Very early start Going to Niagara Falls That's lots of water! Well, I managed to get up early, wash up, pack up and even had a sit down breakfast. Even taking my time I had plenty of time on my hands to browse the aisles at the grocery store and wait for my train. Being 7:30/7:45 in the morning at the grocery store who'd think that there'd be a line up to check out? lol I guess I didn't have on my "angry, don't disturb me or sit beside me" face on this morning. First I was in the line up [View Full Entry]

My greek outfit
Thought that I should do a bit of an update: HALLOWEEN I went to the Law School Halloween party. All of the NZ girls and some others dressed up as Greek Godesses. We had pre party nibbls and drinks at Kendalls and then headed to the party. Unfortunately the party got cancelled at midnight as an Irish exchange student who has a broken leg got pushed through this huge glass window and there wqas glass everywhere. So that was a bit of a bummer.. The pre party drinks were the funnest part of the whole night. Dressing up was really fun [View Full Entry]
