A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Hey everyone! I'm officially in Thunder Bay now! So far it's been awesome! I arrived yesterday - came in on a 7am flight so I was just a tad tired yesterday. I've met one of the two of my roommates so far, and she seems really cool. My place is incredibly nice!! It's very spacious, and super clean. My bedroom is quite large and I have a queen size bed! Thunder Bay is very suburban like. I don't think I could see myself being here longer than 8 months. I heard that it gets down to -60 some days during the [View Full Entry]

Hello all! Thanks to the urging of my Aunt Verna, Tara and I have decided to keep on online journal while we are traveling. It will make it easier for everyone to keep in touch and for us to let everyone know what we are up to. Lindsay [View Full Entry]

One of our favourite places to go on sunny Bamfield days is the lovely Brady's Beach. Located on West Bamfield, getting there involves a short boat trip from Burlo Island and then a half-hour walk over to the ocean side of the peninsula. The beach is actually made up of a series of beaches separated by rocky outcrops. At low tide, it is possible to climb over these and walk a fair way along the coastline, looking out over the magnificent Barkley Sound. Quin gets to engage in his favourite activity of falling off slippery, dangerous rock faces and I get [View Full Entry]

For those that have been around Fitzroy, VIC or Newton, NSW some parts of Toronto will be familiar. The area of most interest was Queen street West. This is the side of the city I got to see on the first few days in Canada. Toronto's much celebrated multi-cultural population is fairly evident, but not dramatically different to Sydney or Melbourne. I do like the Canadian accent and the smiles of many of the people who are both friendly and outgoing. With only a short time in Canada and with a keen need to see more of this country, I decided [View Full Entry]

Today the weather was really crap. Laura, Debbie, Sarah and I went to Granville Island. It is really amazing. There is this piece of land which juts out from the mainland and is only accessible over this bridge. The place is called Granville Island although it is not really an island. What makes Granville even better is the fact that it is beneath one of the large bridges which leads into downtown Vancouver. Granville Island is home to many boutique shops and also to an indoor marketplace. The market is really cool as it is all indoors. It is a huge [View Full Entry]

Jo's birthday bash
Jo's birthday bash
Bet you're sorry you missed this.
September 4th Quick trip to beach to make Jo a birthday card, can't believe she's 20! The road is not so busy today and if anything the scenery is more beautiful - the sunshine helps. Only a small queue for ferry. Rush to business centre to charge Camera and laptop. It's a bit of a pain when we are limited by a rechargeable battery. Back on the mainland we head north and are very soon back in mountains. They are uplifting in more ways than one. Settle on a campsite in the shadow of the 2nd largest lump of granite in [View Full Entry]

First off I apologize for any spelling mistakes or sentences that do not make a whole lot of sense. You will most likely come across that a lot. Usually my mind is going fast than I can type. Happens to most at some point. Well after a crazy busy weekend in Edmonton (was there Wednesday night until Saturday night) I feel like I am still in the same place as I was, which is strange because things were accomplished even if other stuff was not sorted out but anyway...... Went into today feelin' pretty good. After lots of encouragement, re-assurement, [View Full Entry]

Today I had a look around uni but didnt do much as I had my trial at work from 2pm - 6pm. When I arrived at my trial I was given the beautiful yellow pie r squared t-shirt (promise to add a photo!!). I then started serving pizza. I thought that cutting pizza would be so easy.. oh how I was wrong!! There is a definite skill to it! Everytime I thought that I had seperated the slice from the rest I would try to take slice only to find that it was still attached.. The slices are so damn big [View Full Entry]

Bonjour!!! Our week in Montreal has been great.... Just out of camp where days and nights off are limited and it's difficult to coordinate to have these days with your friends, we're now altogether in this beautiful city. Eight of us left New Hampshire on Sunday (28/8), four of the girls, Jenny, Katie B., Katie D. and me in Jenny's car, and the 4 boys; Andy, Ali, Irek (only came up for the first night!) and Mark by bus. Lee and Jess M. came in another car on Tuesday as did Rowan, Remy and Doughty in Doughty's car. Then Jess B. [View Full Entry]
