A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. (solid as a...) there was a flow of positive energy that took over me that day, as you all saw, [View Full Entry]

It’s now day 2 of driving on the Al-can and we haven’t made it that far. We’ve only driven about 5 hours each day -- we made it as far as Whitehorse, in the Yukon, today. Yesterday, on the Dawson Creek to Watson Lake section, we saw so many Caribou - most of them were standing in the middle of the road, apparently licking salt off the road. We also saw a Big Horn Sheep - just one on a section where some rocky cliffs came close to the road. He ran off into some pine trees pretty fast once he [View Full Entry]

Sea Plane

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver
November the seventh was another nice day in Vancouver (something thats apparently quite rare at this time of the year) and we went down to some docks in order to undertake a sightseeing tour of the city on a seaplane. This was to prove to be another great experience in Vancouver. It was a small plane and when we went down to the water the pilot (jokingly) said he wanted one of the passengers to "co-pilot" the plane with him. Initially he (again jokingly, but i didn't get that it was jokingly because i never get stuff like that) said that [View Full Entry]

Hello. Yes I know there was/is no such thing as a streetcar named Toronto, but Toronto has trams and trams are rather cool. The way the locals say Toronto is "Tronno" and if you are unable to pronounce it like that then you are lame and not worthy of being an honorary Torontonian. If there is such a thing. The suburbs immediately surrounding the "downtown" area of Toronto are arranged in the same grid-style city block layout as most North American cities, but it has a distinct London feel to it, with the Chinatown area and the Kensington markets which is [View Full Entry]

All the water has to go somewhere!

First up, sorry about the title of this diary entry, i really tried to think of something better. Vancouver at this time of year tends to be very rainy and its hard for any tourists at this time of year to experience the city's beauty and vibrancy because of all the rain. We were prepared for the fact that this might be the case so it came as a welcome surprise that on Sunday the 6th it was a really sunny day, a day that would give us an opportunity to see for ourselves the city's attractions. In the morning we [View Full Entry]

Waiting for the train Spent lots of time at the Forks Train to Edmonton. I didn't have too much planned for today since the "main attraction" of getting on the westbound train towards Edmonton wasn’t to happen until about 5PM. So Natalie, Laura and I took our time packing up our stuff and having a leisurely breakfast before heading over to the train station to check in our bags. At breakfast we chatted up this cool retired couple from New Zealand. They've been travelling around Canada and the US for almost five months now. They bought a used camper van and [View Full Entry]

Yesterday (Fri, 11.04) we made it Dawson Creek, BC which is milepost 0 of the Alaska Highway, so early this morning we started out on the Al-can. We're now in Fort Nelson, but we're stopping ealy tonight since there aren't that many other "large" towns for a while. So far, we've only taken a few pictures in Canada - I'll upload those the next time. [View Full Entry]

My second trip to a sports event in as many days saw me go to the BC stadium in Vancouver to watch a Canadian Football game, this was me going by myself as Elaine did not want to go. Canadian Football is a similar game to American Football, but there are differences in the rules that make for a more exciting game (i won't go into the rules here, because firstly anybody reading this will become more bored than they already are and secondly i don't fully get them myself to be honest). However the players tend not to be as [View Full Entry]

Long walk to the zoo Bears, cats, birds & kangaroos Chilly out but nice. I decided to change my plans today and go to the zoo with Laura as opposed to checking out the Manitoba Museum and the Planetarium. We left around 11:30, after a leisurely breakfast and walked for a good hour before coming up on the zoo area. It was a little chilly out but not too bad once we got walking. You should have seen how red my cheeks got...perma blush. haha. It was pretty quiet at the zoo. There were perhaps six to eight cars in the [View Full Entry]
