A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Doooooood. $1. That's all I can say.
Today is actually December 3, so my memory of the trip is starting to fuzz around the edges.. Check-in for the conference was at 5pm, and Andrea had class that day, so it was Candy Takes on Montreal Day! I had big big plans, and so little time! We start the day off with the Last Supper (breakfast) at Andrea's; I shall miss her bachelorette pad, but I commemorated it by taking lots of photos. Somehow we managed to get my hugeass luggage down the stairs (she lives on 2nd floor), and since it was a nice day we decided [View Full Entry]

No more shopping please Chillaxin' in Edmonton Easy going day. I took it pretty easy today since I have vowed not to do any shopping of any sort other than grocery shopping. Let's see how long this lasts. haha While making my breakfast of Japanese instant noodles (just trying to finish up my stash of food before leaving catching the train tomorrow) I met a Japanese girl and Canadian guy making some "sandwich maker bundles". Some contained red bean, some corn, some tuna and cheese. You get the idea. They had well over a couple of dozen of them made up! [View Full Entry]

I know it’s early to have started this thing but it allows me to keep everyone abreast of how the prep is coming... I decided to write in this format for a few reasons - the main one being to save me from answering everybody’s question of “How’s the trip coming?”. I know that when we are in Kenya and Tanzania there will not be internet available and that South Africa should have internet café’s so you will all have to wait until then for me to update it. Today I purchased my plane ticket to Nairobi and return from Johannesburg, [View Full Entry]

Day 2: Arrival!

North America » Canada » Quebec » Montréal
Frites alors! Poutine fun.
Frites alors! Poutine fun.
Believe it or not, we're sober here. They gave us crayons to draw with! And there's poutine! What a deadly combination.
9:30am: L'Arrival, Montreal-Trudeau airport. After the insanely miserable red-eye flight and the boring transfer and being awake for the last 20 hours or so, I finally finally arrive. French land! There is so much more French than I'd expected! It's oui this and non that. Crazies. Spent some time trying to figure out where the dealio the L'aerobus (shuttle to downtown) was with my pathetic french. Hopped on the shuttle to Berri Central and met up with Andrea! Yay! Her bachelorette pad is the coolest nichiest spot in the plateau. Ooh la la. I was there to see the christening of [View Full Entry]

See Legislature Quite impressive inside here And the tour's free! I dilly dallied around the room organizing some of my things while Michelle packed up her bags. She wanted to move onto Calgary and then Banff sooner rather than later so as to be able to find herself a job. So with all of Michelle's stuff in tow we walked over the bridge into the downtown area to check out the Legislature Building. Michelle was a bit pressed for time so we just took a few quick photos outside of the buildings and then decided to find out where the bus [View Full Entry]

Me and Michelle

Having spent the morning doing the sea plane thing (centurylong), we found another activity to do in Vancouver that afternoon. This was Kayaking, when i first saw that we could Kayak in the Pacific ocean i figured this would be a lot of fun, after all it was new (to me anyway), it was adventurous and this trip is all about things like that. I persuaded Elaine to also do it (it wouldn't be as much fun on your own) and we paid for Kayaks for two hours. (centurylong) However when we actually went down to the jetty to get into [View Full Entry]

I was keener and arrived at the airport 2 hours early, at 9pm for an 11:05pm red-eye flight. Along the way I bumped into Mike who said he'd be in Toronto for 18 hours before heading to Montreal, but the real problem was, where would he shower? Helloooo KFC wet wipes... Fact #1: YVR is ghetto. When I went to the WestJet counter to check in, this is what happened: WestJet: Hi, your last name? Me: Lee WestJet: Candy Yuen Yan? Me: Yes..? WestJet: Perfect, here's your boarding pass, and leave your baggage in the corner wall behind me there Me: [View Full Entry]

The Mall!
The Mall!
Need I say more??
West Edmonton Mall Shopping, shopping, more shopping Charge it to Visa! It's about 6AM right now and I had too much water to drink last night and can't sleep anymore on the train. So here I am writing in my journal. I'm just thinking that this is my second to last train ride before I get into Vancouver. Now what will the last few hours on that train be like? Will they seem to just drag on? I sure hope not! Once we pulled into Edmonton Station it was really crowded inside the tiny terminal building. I had to wait for [View Full Entry]
