A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. The Homeless: So anyway I was on my way to the Depeche Mode concert when I stopped for a coffee, and as I was reclining outside the cafe in the 5 degrees C evening I could discern over the deafening din of my headphones an intrusive kind of music. Removing my earplugs I realised it was less like music and more closely related to the intoxicated incoherent verbal rantings of a decidedly dirty and scruffy homeless guy staggering behind a trolley full of plastic bags across the other side of the street. Someone nearby commented how sorry he felt for the [View Full Entry]

Quin the Monkey!
Quin the Monkey!
Climbing down the ladders
Once again it was sunny so we decided to hike some of the West Coast Trail. The West Coast Trail is in the Pacific Rim National Park. It starts (or ends!) at Bamfield and goes all the way down the coast almost, reaching Victoria which is the capital of British Columbia. The Trail is 75 km long and takes about 8 days to hike (or so the guide book says - it would probably take me 2 weeks!). It was originally an escape route for the survivors of shipwrecks. We hiked in 6km and back, which was tough enough! At the [View Full Entry]

The Final Countdown

North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary
The final countdown has begun. In only 3 days until I will be on the beaches of Ecuador and winter jackets and mittens will be a distant memory. Now is the big push to finish packing, attempt to ensure that I have all of the necessities and say my final goodbyes. Things have been, and will continue to be crazy, but it will all be worth it when I am enjoying the sun and surf and get news of that back home is 40 below! [View Full Entry]

Die Niagara Falls
Die Niagara Falls
Einfach genial.

Lapdogs In Armani Suits

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto
I am overwhelmed here. went to meet brother Andy for tea yesterday, and of course he suggests a place in Yucky Yorkville. It is just not my scene any more. I was ambushed by lapdogs in more expensive co-ordinating sweater sets than i've ever owned and the assholes who belong to them. What a rediculous bunch of pushy rude and rich f-ers. I longed for tv bingo and a six pac of schooner as i tried to delicatley handle my petitt fours. redick. and i used to love this shit! I am now living at Young/St. Clair, which is not much [View Full Entry]

Total verwirrt!
[more]

Country roads...
Ein Elch!
Idylle

Last weekend a friend and I wanted to climb up Grouse Mountain and check whether there were any snow on the mountain. (I never see snow in my entire life, because for all my life I lived in Hong Kong and Singapore, where the probability of snowing is zero.) However, when we woke up in the morning, Vancouver was covered in a blanket of thick fog. From my window, I could hardly see a thing more than 50 metres away. In the end, we didn't go to Grouse Mountain. Instead, we stayed at home for the whole day to surf the [View Full Entry]

Quin sampling a mushroom
Quin sampling a mushroom
This one is actually poisonous!
I managed to get up a bit earlier and being sunny again, we decided to go mushrooming. Pippi and Quin have become avid mushroomers after doing a course at the Bamfield mushroom festival. We took the boat to West Bamfield and set off in our gum boots. We had only gone over the hill when we got lucky. Quin, with his eagle eye, spotted a patch of golden chanterelles growing under some ferns near the roadside. This turned out to be the pick of the day. Particularly as these are the yummiest mushrooms, with a creamy taste and smooth, firm texture. [View Full Entry]

Just got home

North America » Canada » Alberta » Edmonton
So I just got home from a three and a half year trip. I am tired. I wrote about the whole thing at Whereshegoes Writings I have to be honest. I need a break. There are so many things going through my head right now and I mostly feel like an emotional mess. I know this can happen. I have set myself up pretty good tho except that I feel really isolated at the moment. Its a little hard because I dont feel like many people really understand. And I am tired of trying to explain it. I guess I just [View Full Entry]

The weather has been absolutely glorious since I arrived. Every day has been sunny and we have felt compelled to make the most of it given that it rained for four weeks straight before my arrival - apparently this is normal I’m told! On Sunday we went on a short walk to Brady’s Beach because we only had a few hours of daylight left. I was still adjusting to the time difference and recovering from the flight so I had gotten up very late. Brady’s Beach has amazing small islands of rock on the shore with trees growing on top.
