A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. The weather has once again been fine, although cold and frosty. We decided to make the most of the weather and our time left in Bamfield by going kayaking. We took the boat to the dock in West Bamfield and walked ashore to get kitted out. Unfortunately, Pippi and I decided not to wear our gumboots. An important lesson I have learned here is, if in doubt always wear gumboots! We had to lug our kayaks down to the dock and carefully sidle in without toppling over and falling in. We were inside a dock that is surrounded on three sides [View Full Entry]

November 29th to December 1st - At around 11pm on November the 28th I caught a Greyhound bus to Niagra Falls. The trip was very long (approx 8 hours). When I arrived on the US side of the falls it was very early and still dark outside. SO I sat in Denny's and had some breakfast. At around 7.30am I decided that I could wait no longer and I headed towards the falls. It was a very bad idea... there I was with my friggin massive bag over my shoulder and my crappy umbrella and it was pouring with rain. I [View Full Entry]

The white spots in the photo are the snow flakes... (They reflect the light from my camera flash)
The weather is really weird in Vancouver. Two weeks ago it was raining every day. Last week it was foggy. (Refer to my previous posts.) Today, it snows!!! After my German class in Downtown, I took a bus back to UBC. When I alighted from the bus, I saw a powder-like substance falling from the sky. At first, I thought it was rain. But upon closer inspection, that stuff didn't behave like rain, because it was falling down slowly and gently, unlike raindrops, which falls quickly in straight lines... I quickly went home and surfed the website for Vancouver's weather. To [View Full Entry]

Well I now have only 20 days to go. I'm getting so excited. It seems to far away yet it is coming so soon. I can not wait to leave. The days seem so long almost unbearable at times. I keep telling myself the longer I have to wait the better it will be when I get there, with every passing day I get more home sick, and anxiouse. I CAN'T wait.....I can''t wait to see the look on everybodys faces, when i show up outta no where it will be so awesome.......but I know this time it will be even [View Full Entry]

So I'm taking it one day at a time......bah every day seems like 5 but I know I only have 19 days left. Which no matter how close it really is, seems sooooo far away. I guess it's just the excitment building up more and more and more. I am finally realizing that not only am I going to be back in India but I will now spend Christmas millions of miles away from my family, for the frist time ever. I am very excited to see how my boyfriend and his family celebrate christmas, I think it will be awesome, [View Full Entry]

This photo is taken in September, when the weather is still nice and sunny.
Last week's fog is really an eye-opener for me... I have never seen such a thick fog in my whole life. For several days, the fog lingered around and everybody was feeling moody and depressed. Then, on last thursday, the fog disappeared and finally we managed to see rays of sunlight. However, on friday, the whole place was covered by fog again. To make things worse, it was raining at the same time! (Fog + rain + cold wind was a terrible combination.) Finally, on Saturday morning, the fog and rain disappeared, leaving behind a clear blue sky. To everyone's relief, [View Full Entry]

Negotiating Keeha
Negotiating Keeha
hhmmm where to next?
Today we went on a death march to Keeha Beach. The track is called Keeha Trail but I think it should be renamed Keeha Creek! It’s only 3km long but it took us four hours to hike in and back. It was another fine and sunny day but we didn’t leave until after lunch because we thought it would be another short and pleasant stroll like Brady’s Beach. How wrong we were! It was the toughest hike any of us had done. We took the boat up the inlet to East Bamfield and then drove the car up the South Bamfield [View Full Entry]

Airport hijinks

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto
Feeling the burning need to leave the sudden cold-snap in Southern Ontario, I've arrived at Peason International Airport a wee bit early...it's now 5:15 p.m. and my flights not until 10:20 p.m....whatever. My parents dropped me off and after a surprisingly tearless fairwell I was left to my own devices...which entailed standing in the check-in line for an hour...by myself...with no one to talk to...well this is just peachy. This does, however, give me a golden opportunity to do some serious people watching. The people in line around me are mostly Asian families (my first flight l [View Full Entry]

GM Place. It reminds me (a little too much) of the Entertainment Centre in Sydney. Cavernous, accoustically retarded, expansive (and expensive) - as you can see, this kind of place doesn't really impress me as a concert venue. Of course I'm sure it is perfectly suited for hosting the home games of Ice Hockey when the Cannucks play here. I wanted to see Depeche Mode, but went for the cheapest seats available. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, the seat I landed was pretty bad. But on the bright side it wasn't the worst!! (Didn't come with complementary field glasses though...) On my [View Full Entry]
