A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Banff continued to be an amazing part of my trip. We met some great people and decided that we wanted to stay around a bit longer than planned. We noticed in reception a sign looking for volunteers so we enquired what that was all about. It turned out that if you volunteered to work in the hostel between 9am-1pm during the day, you could get a free nights accommodation-BRILLIANT! Or so we thought! The next morning at 8am, Lucy and I awoke and resentlfully got up...my tonsils were on fire and I considered pulling a sicky but figured on day 1 [View Full Entry]

Europe goes crazy about soccer, Canada however is more into HOCKEY! As mentioned before, I must admit I can't help loving that sport either.. So after a Dino's and a Hitmen game it was time for the real thing.. The Flames!!! As the third largest city in Canada (after Montreal and Toronto), Calgary ofcourse must have a decent hockey team, and they do, the Calgary Flames are doing pretty good, 3rd in their league at the moment. Therefore, one of the things I had to do before leaving Calgary was to visit the Flames. During a group meeting Norbert, another Dutch [View Full Entry]

4 Days left...

North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary
Only 4 days left until departure. Days are flying by, seems that there are so many last minute things to do! At the gym this morning (Kirsten can attest to this), my scrambled thoughts are coming out in rather humorous sentences... something about the fact that I would never trust anyone to tint my lows and brashes... lol. This is a good indication of where my head is at right now. Excited - absolutely! the last time I left the continent it was 1993. I am looking forward to a world entirely different from what I am used to, the experiences [View Full Entry]

Where could I go?
Where could I go?
When I am over there I am going around with www.busabout.com and this is a map of where I could go with them, oh the options
Well here I am getting ready for the trip. I'm just testing this thing out now to make sure that it works before I go over because if it doesn't that would require some last minute playing around. I've almost finished all my shopping and by the end of this week I will have my pack all ready to go. The passports still haven’t come in yet and I just found out that my bus ticket was reserved for a Glynn Jones with the wrong first name and also that for some reason they think I’m a female so needless to [View Full Entry]

This is the only snow we recieved this year. Since then it's just been rain, rain, and more rain.
For all of you that don't know where Aldergrove is... hope this helps MyLocalArea. See where I'm really from. Travels plans are confirmed and I leave April 8th to board the beautiful Radiance of the Seas with Royal Caribbean in Miami. I am trying to tie up some loose ends at home, but have spent most of my time and money shopping most recently. I think I may have scared my mom with the power shopping trip we took. After 2 hours and 3 stores, I had purchased 3 pairs of shoes, 4 shirts, and a big box stuffed with clothes [View Full Entry]

Well for the weekend we went to Montreal with all the internationals. We hired cars and drove up on the friday, went out for dinner that night at a nice place near our hostel. On saturday we walked around for most of the day checking out the city and then went to a really cool pub kinda like little creatures in freo, by our hostel and had beers, chips and gravy. was really nice. That night we went to a club called Living which was ok but i was pretty tired. Although having said that, caitlin gave me a hair cut [View Full Entry]

a cathedral

I hate fire alarms, as it was a fire alarm that woke me up at 2.30 in the morning as somebody decided that it was a good idea to through a fag butt down a trash shoot. So everybody had to evacuate the building as it takes 4 fire trucks to put out the smallest fire(why you need 4 trucks I have no idea). I have to wait for at least 45 minutes in my pj's be for they let us back to bed. This mornig I looked out the window to be confronted with a hail of rain, then I [View Full Entry]

Hardly your stereotypical "pot hole" - stunning beauty created by mother earth.
Traveling can be very demanding. Having to decide where to go, where to eat and who to talk to every day is a full time job. Especially after a week in Whistler where hard work included: Taking about an hour every morning to get at least four layers of clothing on, getting yourself back up after falling into half a meter or powder, cooking macaroni and cheese every night because you are on a budget and having to try at least four new beer brands every night (market research - have decided I’m going to be a freelance beer expert) and [View Full Entry]
