A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. FORK IN THE ROAD
FORK IN THE ROAD
Been to all cities but two...SK would be a shorter plane ride!
Can you imagine a year ago I decided I wanted to leave Canada and continue my travels across Europe? When I think of my one year adventure across the world in those terms it seems so incredibly amazing how fast time does fly by. Then again any possible way I think about my trip I find it is incredible and think I am SO lucky to be able to fly over the rainbow. Here is my planned itinerary so far. The beginning is more relaxed and a take it as it comes style as I try to settle in and hopefully [View Full Entry]

The Hand and The Guinness
Had a hectic start to the day...was glad to be departing late. My arrival at the airport was late (shocking I know!) so I could only say a quick goodbye to W. Oh well...no time for tears that way. So here I am now, the Maple Leaf lounge! Eating a veggie burger, sippin a Guinness, not to shabby! Thanks to EB...row 12...AWESOME! I'm going to enjoy this while I can...who knows what lies ahead. Customs was a breeze. Expect to be in Honolulu and Sydney 2 hours each, then onto Melbourne. Here I go! [View Full Entry]

A short, but pleasent trip that I have done with my friends at Cote-de-Beaupre, just East of Quebec City. We hiked at Cap Tourmente Nature Reserve, visited the Basilique Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre (sorry, no pic), les Chutes Montmorency, the very informative Musee de l'Abeille in the village of Chateau-Richer and finally Ile d'Orleans. Hey Everyone, Well so much for me trying to do this regularly and keep it up to date and all. But seeing as i'm staying here for a bit longer now i figure i'll start now and make more of an effort to do it. So first to catch up on the last 4 months. Getting Here So everything was pretty uneventful on our flight from Brisbane to Sydney, and after being in Sydney for around an hour or so we were off to LA. We managed to get emergency exit seating thank the lord, with Matt and Toby both being [View Full Entry]

More at the pub

Past Saturday was really really really the last time skiing in the Rockies for now.. Actually I already assumed the Sunday before would be the last time, but eventually Elise and Robert (a friend of Mat visiting from Germany) convinced me to come anyway. Part of the attraction of this extra day skiing is that this time I would have to pay considerably less than normal, since I would pay less for the ticket and would not need rentals. This meant that instead of about $90 the trip would only cost me about $40, a lot better! So early in the [View Full Entry]

Oh Canada....
Oh Canada....
On the ferry to Bowen Island, just north of Vancouver
I've had the most wonderful tour guides who have been taking us to all the best spots around Vancouver. Check out the Map below to see the spots we've been to which might make sense when reading this blog entry. Although if it still doesnt make sense then too bad, keep trying. Went on a little trip to Lynn's Canyon which was totally stunning, only minutes away from North Vancouver and you are in the wilderness, the lungs of the city. Stunning suspension bridge over fresh icey cold water, mossy branches, squelchy steps between the neatly maintained boardwalks. Then to West [View Full Entry]

My journey across Canada has continued eastbound to Manitoba, first setting foot in Winnipeg. Nothing immediately grabbed me about the streets of this city, so I found a donut shop and ran my finger down my list of nearby hostels. Most hostel owners seem to find locations nearest bus stations, which I greatly appreciate considering my map reading skills. I circled the winning write up, and set off. Within a few moments I did a couple of backpacking pirouettes on the street just trying to confirm the right direction, and was quickly approached by a local laughing at my dance moves. <<pics will be there soon!>> Finally the day my roommate has been telling me about since forever had come.. Bermuda Shorts Day! BSD is huge, that was already clear to me. Besides the wristband for the beer garden I even had to get a wristband to be allowed to get into my building, since they didn’t want any people who don’t live there in residence, to prevent to many crazy parties in rez (which of course doesn’t help at all J) BSD is officially the last day of class, but since part of the campus is transformed into a huge beer [View Full Entry]

Day 8: Toronto

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto
Day 8: April 13 - Toronto Accommodation: Global Backpackers Today was the last day of my trip in North America, and I didn’t have any major agenda again today so I took my time. I had a late breakfast, spent a bit of time on the net, then headed out into the cold towards the CN Tower, apparently the world’s tallest building. I could be wrong though. It was surprisingly a relatively short walk from my hostel, and fairly inexpensive also. I went inside and up an escalator and after getting my ticket I had to walk through this security barrier [View Full Entry]
