A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. I got back last night from a trip to Vancouver Island. Myself and my SA friend Brendan had a couple of days off so we decided to meet a couple of our friends on the Island who were doing a tour and would be in a surfing town called Tofino on the west coast (where there is nothing to stop the pacific waves breaking all the way from Japan). So we departed Whistler with hitchhiking signs made and boarded the first Greyhound of the day on Tuesday from Whistler at five thirty. Didn't see a bear but did see a Coyote [View Full Entry]

Here's an image, I'm sitting in a leather chair, with slippers, eight sweaters, 3 pairs of sweat pants and a touque on, listening to Tony parsons yapping about some fire somewhere. Any guesses on where I am? yes that is right you super sleuths you, I'm in freezing cold, lets try and hurry up global warming for crying out loud, Langley BC Canada. Lindsay and I headed to the airport in bangkok after a long day of shopping and getting facials and pedicures, to board our plane in the middle of the night. Unfortunately we didn't get bumped up beyond our [View Full Entry]

Vancouver
Morning views from hotel.
The morning came around too quickly due to the alarm waking us up at 7am as we had a long day ahead of driving. Before checking out, we managed to upload the last two blogs, which was good as there is no WAP at our hotel tonight. Loaded the car up and Gail went next door to get our free muffin and orange juice so we could breakfast as we drove. Once out of Vancouver Liisa sped along, keeping an eye in the mirror for police, so we could cover as much ground as possible. It would be a long drive [View Full Entry]

Heading over on the ferry. Lucy, Amy, Madeline & me
After a fantastic week or so in Vancouver, unexpectedly extended after I lost my wallet (a big drama but everything got sorted in the end) Lucy, Amy, Madeline and I headed over to Vancouver Island. We spent a night in Victoria which is definitely the 'british' part of British Columbia but to be honest wasnt that wrapped with the place. We rented bicycles and did a bit of riding around the city and coast and had sushi for dinner (we love our sushi - again to be explained in another post) So being less than impressed with Victoria we decided to [View Full Entry]

I'm not sure if I like this blog. Let us know. Thought it'd be an easy way to let everyone know what we're up to as long as we have some time to use the internet, it wouldn't be a terrible thing if we had more exciting things to do. Email us and tell us what's going on. [View Full Entry]

Capilano Suspension Bridge
Capilano Suspension Bridge
Entrance to Capilano.
Today was a lazy day. Didn’t get up until around 9am, and then sat and updated the blog and sorted photos out until 1pm. The cleaners were banging impatiently at the door, wanting to come in and clean, but we made them wait until we left for the afternoon. Decided against yet another Mc D’s gourmet breakfast and had a chocolate instead - probably more nutritious too! Our first stop for the day was the Capilano Suspension Bridge originally built in 1889. This suspension bridge stretches 450 feet (137m) across and 230 feet (70m) above Capilano River. Not for the faint [View Full Entry]

We got to the airport nice and easy this morning but everything from that point on was just a big pain in the a##! San Francisco Airport is by far the most unorganised airport we have seen in the last 6 months. We had a flight booked with United Airlines and initially got sent from their counter for international flights to the one for domestic. Fair enough, we had that before. Once there, we had to check-in through one of those e-ticket machines, which after a while of pressing buttons and punching in numbers gave us a confirmation code and told [View Full Entry]

Snow peak
The weather is a little colder than it was this time last year.
We're back. Here was everything thanking their lucky stars that we made it to the end of our trip and back to Vancouver safe and sound. No more blogs to endure - hah!!!, we've enjoyed writing them so much that we've decided to keep them up. After all, they are such a good way to share even more adventures with friends and family who are dotted the world over. So, we made it safely back to Vancouver on November 25th 2005. After a wonderful year away and lots of lovely sun and heat we hit the cold weather with a bump. [View Full Entry]

The day started way too early, for people who are supposed to be on holiday, at 6am! Today we were going to catch the ferry to Victoria on Vancouver Island, 1 ˝ hours away. It was tipping it down and we hoped that it would improve, as today would involve plenty of walking. Breakfast was again the delights of Mc D’s before heading to Tsawwassen ferry port. We arrived in good time so pulled out the lap top to update the blog while sitting in the car waiting to board the ferry. Once on, we strolled around the decks taking in [View Full Entry]

Still At Home The weather is finally getting warm, which is good, or i'd hop on a plane ASAP! I'm planning a trip for September of this year to Australia, New Zealand, and who knows where else. I'm travelling alone for the most part, so if i find a friend along the way (and it sounds like it's easy to do in oz) then maybe i'll head to thailand and some such places. But until then, I'll be saving the cash to get to oz in the first place, and visiting with my jealous friends who apparently can't take time out [View Full Entry]
