A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. April 23 Today we began our drive up the Alaska Highway, a prospect we have anticipated since November. Dawson Creek is mile zero for a route which is deservedly famous since its amazing beginning only 60-odd years ago. Built in a matter of months from wilderness by the Army Corps of Engineers during WW II, it was an undertaking so daunting as to be hard to imagine. I highly recommend you Google your way into reading a history of the project. Particularly interesting to me was the work done by the African-American units. Initially assigned to accomplish grunt work in the [View Full Entry]

Sorry for the long gap in updates as I fell behind, so I am going back a bit in history. After one hell of a long trip (6 hrs), we finally manage to make it to Victoria, all it takes is a train, three buses and ferry journey. After finding our hostel and getting settled into a 42 person room (the hostel is a listed building so they can't put in any dividing rooms). Later on in the day we go for a stroll around Victoria. Then later I made a large pot of vegetarian chilli that seem to go down [View Full Entry]

Hello Mungrils, We have been in Banff for 3 days now and are settling in. Steve and philly have been wonderfully generous hosts and I feel we are taking over their lives... we live on their floor, we use their vehicle and their mountian bikes, all while they are at work making juice. We have also sampled some of their juice concoctions and I recommend them highly - a highlight was definately the mocha smoothy, very tasty! Banff is an amazingly beautiful little town and has much to offer. The wildlife is never far away and we have seen deer wandering [View Full Entry]

Had a leisurely morning, getting up late and having a bowl of Lucky Charms before heading out for the day. Today we were just concentrating our sightseeing in and around Banff, stopping first at the still frozen Lake Minnewanka - ‘Lake of the Water Spirits.’ It was pretty, and after stopping for a short period we then drove further on to Two Jack Lake. Rounding a corner, there in the middle of the road, were three Big Horn Sheep busily licking the minerals off the asphalt. Can’t imagine that would be very tasty mixed in with car oil and the rest! The second day Nancy had to work so I was on my own to terrorize Montreal and I hit some pretty interesting sites. As always I was hungry so I needed to grab me some food. I figured that being in Montreal I had to try some regional dishes. Well me and Mikka found ourselves a small little pub on St Catherines St and had a smoked meat sandwich with a pint of Belle Gueule beer. Talk about tasty, this thing was AMAZING. When I first walked into the pub they greeted me in French so I tried my best "bonjour [View Full Entry]

Well folks, as you can see, my location has changed once again. I have once again joined the Canadian population. The exact location is a bit wrong, but that's because they don't have Chilliwack in the TravelBlog database. But that's where I am now, Chilliwack, British Columbia. Let me tell you, it's great to be back. The air smells fantastic, the streets are clean, I'm not afraid to go outside, and I'm SURROUNDED BY MOUNTAINS AGAIN!!! My precious precious mountains. *Drool* This morning people were talking about how it's such a lovely day outside, but of course Sandi and I are [View Full Entry]

April 22 Ad libbing of the day’s plan was again the norm today. I waited until the others had left in the cars before beginning my preparations for the first flight of the day. The weather was poor but the forecast was for rapid improvement. I had chosen Fox Creek as the first stop and left open a decision on the night’s destination, dependant on driving times and temperament of the drivers. It was about a two hour flight from Rocky Mountain House to Fox Creek. Getting within 10 miles of the airport, I announced my presence on the common Flight [View Full Entry]

Arriving in Toronto in the rain we were extremely jet lagged from the time difference. The first day was spent finding our hotel and recovering. The next morning we watched the Imola Formula 1 Grand Prix, when it finished we caught the subway and walked all around downtown Toronto. We went to see the CN tower but it was covered by the clouds. It was raining quite heavily and as we were walking around the Skydome we decided to go into the Hard Rock Cafe there. That ended up being a great idea. The Hard Rock Cafe was like a corporate [View Full Entry]

Well as you may or may not know, I've been strategically approaching local businesses to get goods donated for the school. I picked up tons more stuff today so I thought the logical step would be to let you all know what I've collected so far: * From Titles (campus bookstore) : 300 pencils * From the McMaster Health Centre : 400 bandaids, 800 antiseptics * From Fortinos : 10 dictionnaries, 120 big pieces of sidewalk chalk, 2 kids card games, 2 boxes of crayons, 2 packs of pencil crayons, 1 cribbage board * From Grand and Toy : 72 pens, [View Full Entry]
