A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Day 1-ish

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto
I've been in Toronto for two days, we leave for London tomorrow. It's going to be a very long day since we arrive in London at about 9pm and our flight to Helsinki doesn't leave until 10am the next day. We didn't bother to book anything or plan anything and who knows how adventurous we'll be feeling when we get there so there may be a lot of sitting around Heathrow. Good thing Sonja is good at back massages and likes to hear me perform every rap song I know. Just 12-ish hours. The highlight of these days in Toronto (besides [View Full Entry]

April 24 The drive from Fort Nelson to Watson Lake is considered by many to be the quintessential Alaska Highway experience. According to Maria and Scott, this is true, in bold letters. Along the way they saw mule deer, coyote, mountain goat, caribou, bison, moose, and more hawks and falcons, according to Scott, than one could count. Alpine lakes, old growth forest, and snow-capped mountain peaks. This is the northern B.C. and Yukon experience. Watson Lake is best known for the forest of signs indicating city limits of places around the globe. One account we saw claimed there were 30 [View Full Entry]

So surely...

Hey all, I have designs to write some beautiful travel prose at some point but seeing as the very real possibility exists that that point will arrive shortly after the severe chilling of señor Lucifer's humble abode, i'll hit you with this little ditty... This is it, our trip to Asia, our entry to into another part of the world. It's a bit overwhelming to know you're going to be living such a different life in about 4 months. Your family and friends that you too often take for granted will soon be sorely missed. All the things that keep me [View Full Entry]

For months Mike had been verbally, and enthusiastically spurring me into training for the 10km Vancouver Sun Run. The only way I found to quiet him was by either announcing all the wonderful training I was doing (in the form of a couple of hours of snowboarding followed by a couple of hours at the pub) "Yeah, Mike, you should've seen all the effort I put in yesterday!" Or by just retorting that "the pub was great - how was your training?" In all my pre-race training entailed some concerts, snowboarding, beer drinking, but no actua [View Full Entry]

Yesterday was the last day of Blackcomb mountain and the official end of the season. It was also the most fun day I have had here. I actually got up for first lift with a toasted bagel in hand with Brendan with the intention of doing all the stupid extreme runs that we hadn't yet done early on before we started drinking. So we hiked up a double black called spanky's ladder and dropped into some open bowls. Then as the sun was so hot we stripped down to t shirts and went off to tackle the steepest run on the [View Full Entry]

We caught the train to Quebec which turned out to be a city that felt very European. It was cold and snowed a little. At this point I had a very bad cold. But I did manage to buy myself a new jacket which I really liked. Then we walked around the town which was very small. At one point we were near the city wall when Matthew's cap flew off in the wind and landed down the bottom of the wall. Luckily there were some workmen doing something down there so in very broken French we managed to ask if [View Full Entry]

Trees along the road to Lake Louise.
It was a shame we had to leave Canmore, Banff and our nice hotel, but must press on in order to fit everything in we wished to see. Gail made use of the kitchen and made sandwiches for lunch with leftovers so that was hamburger buns filled with lettuce, ketchup, onions, tomatoes, and wait for it - stuffed jalapeno peppers! A rather odd sandwich, but there you go! Checked out at 11am after another breakfast of Lucky Charms. We took Bow Valley Parkway (Route 1A) up to Lake Louise, stopping off at Johnson Canyon 30k north of Banff to view the [View Full Entry]

I'm off to Nigeria tommorrow! Oi it is going to be a long plane ride over, but I'm still excited! First time setting foot in Africa :D I'll be gone for just over 2 months and it is mainly work related, but I'm sure once all the work junk is over with I'll venture out and explore lots. I'll try to take lots of pictures too and buy neat souvenirs for the people I know. Wether or not I have internet access out there is questionable. I'll be able to use basic email, but I may not get to update this [View Full Entry]

My messy room
Where I

The journey from New York to Montreal was a bit of a mission, having to go through customs to enter Canada. It all went ok though and everyone on the bus got back on it. Some of the woman were commenting that not all the passageners always get back on! The first thing that hit me when we arrived was the amount of French that is spoken so widely. I knew that many different languages are evident in Canada but just didn’t realise the degree to which they are spoken. It is impressive , especially, coming from the UK were most [View Full Entry]
