A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. So again i know i'm usually quick to point this out, but i am infact writing all of this in retrospect so you have to bare with me on the scetchy details (not that you'll really know or not if they're sketchy but if something i say here doesnt' amtch up with something i said in an email 4 months ago, that's why) So leaving Boston was kinda sad and i was a wee bit reluctant to leave my comfortable courner and be thrown into a completely unfamiliar city with no one i knew there, and with so many uncertainties (was [View Full Entry]

James says: ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Today we went riding with Philly & Steve and we had a very fun time. We played around and pulled some successful moves... but also did some very funny bails (a few of which were caught on film). After such a hard day at the office we had to reward ourselves with a hot jacuzzi to ease our aching muscles. Back to the mountain again tomorrow... we nearly need a day off. [View Full Entry]

The West Edmonton Mall was once the largest mall in the world. It has apparently now been outdone by a mall in America. Well, those Yanks can never be outdone on anything, especially by the Candians eh?! So anyway, we had to get up really early because it's a three hour drive from Calgary to Edmonton. Thats not much in Candian terms. I guess a lot of people drive three hours to have dinner with their neighbours! But for me thats almost like driving from one side of the UK to the other. And Edmonton isn't even really half way up [View Full Entry]

The journey from Montreal was actually quite nice. The coaches we took in Canada were a lot more comfortable than the American ones, more leg room and better head rests. I managed to sleep most of the way but still caught a few glimpses of the scenery, it was very beautiful and much greener then what I have seen in America. We arrived at the station and got a taxi to the hostel as it would have involved many transfers on the buses to get there. It really is no fun trying to lug our bags on and off several different [View Full Entry]

Bears!
Bears!
Ah, a glimmer of hope, we may see a bear after all!
Will we see a bear today? Jasper National Park has a high concentration of Grizzly’s and Black Bear, so the odds should be stacked in our favour; or so you would think! Our eyes scoured the roadsides, trees, and open areas in search of a bear, but it proved to be a fruitless endeavour. We had a sneaking suspicion that the bears knew we were coming and would hide behind the trees out of our sight! In order to aid people like us who wish to see bears, perhaps they should hang berries from trees to entice them from their hideouts [View Full Entry]

The Crossings
The Crossings
Our hotel for the night on the Icefield Parkway.
Before we left the Crossings Motel, we walked around the large gift shop and hoped to get breakfast, but we missed that by five minutes. The only thing we could find to eat in the little food area was oatmeal and raisin cookies and nuts, which we got, and a drink. Just as well, as there was nothing to eat until we reached Jasper later that evening! The drive up towards Columbia Icefield was again spectacular, aided by the clear blue skies and oatmeal and raisin cookies! We pulled over at the numerous scenic stops and admired the views as well [View Full Entry]

The Moose Tour

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff
Left Vancouver on the Tuesday and headed out to Banff on the Moose Tour. It was definitley a good way to see everything rather than sitting on the Greyhound bus for 12 hours straight. We had four night stops - Shuswap Lake in a very bad hostel. A friend who did the same trip later on actually got bed bugs from the place! - Banff - Jasper in a great 'rustic' hostel where we had a big campfire without the marshmallows because of the bears! - then back to Banff where I stayed. It was really beautiful scenery especially when we [View Full Entry]

April 25th On to Whitehorse. Now over 60 degrees north latitude. I arrived in the Cessna ahead of the road-bound travelers, but unfortunately, as has been the case in most locales, the museums are closed for the winter. Reopenings are typically posted as mid-May. There was a theater advertising what looked to be an interesting experience in Watson Lake yesterday, but it was not open for the season yet. What a spectacular flight it was today. Most of what I saw on the flight today was indistinguishable to me from Alaska. After Scott and Maria arrived, I took her for a [View Full Entry]

So, we have been in Calgary for a week now and haven't managed to do much so far. Home comforts have been sorely missed over the duration of the trip so we have been making the most of Tom and Laura's house over here. Their house is really nice and has everything you need and more- mini gym and home cinema in the basement!! It's things like these that just make it easy to just be in the house all day and not see the outside world even once. I think we may be disappointing Tom and Laura a bit, they [View Full Entry]

Boxes and Mess 1
Boxes and Mess 1
I'm going to run out of boxes before I run out of stuff!
Well, all my readers should be very proud of me. I've taken the critical first steps of moving and packed some stuff! It's actually pretty scary to look at the disaster I've made of the apartment... LK is going to be unimpressed when she gets home... You'd think that packing would make the place CLEANER because you're taking stuff out of it, but really it just messes everything up because the stuff you're not packing has nowhere to go. Very dismaying indeed. [View Full Entry]
