A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Got up early and finished last minute packing. Ryan and i went out for a really nice breakfast in a restaurant situated beside the golf course. It was really cosy sitting by the fireplace. It was hard to believe my holiday had come to an end. Ryan dropped me off to the bus station and we said our goodbyes. I was really sad to go but know its a place i will always go back to. The drive to Vancouver takes two hours and is one of the most scenic drives ive ever experienced. I was just staring out the window [View Full Entry]

Ranchman & more

So, now it's already weekend again. Time really flies by.. I just don't want to count how many time is still left, it's just too little.. This week was just like most weeks, classes, sports (Actually, I also started playing squash here now, which is a lot of fun!! Ok, after the first time I had such sore muscles that I could barely walk the next day, but it's getting better :)), etc. The movie this Monday was a lot better than the last one, we've seen Kiss kiss bang bang, which I found really great. Wednesday we've been to the [View Full Entry]

A view from the walking/biking trail following the Skytrain route.
An uneventful trip from Bangkok to Vancouver. It has re-enforced my my belief that it is the most beautiful city in Canada, though I have no desire to live here again. The view from the plane as we came in for landing was spectacular with the bays, farmland, mountains and the mighty Fraser River as a backdrop. We have spent 4 days here wandering the downtown. We discovered a walking/bike trail that follows the Skytrain from at least the Metrotown to Broadway Skytrain stations. A relief from walking the sidewalks along the main streets. We leave today for Halifax and then [View Full Entry]

Woke up and thankfully my ankle was feeling better. The swelling had come down a lot and thank god as it was my last day riding. Decided to go up Blackcomb. All my mates were working so unfortunately was riding on my own. But up there you just end up making friends with anyone. So i had been talking to this 20 year old kid who seemed to have fallen in love with me on the chairlift. He was just wierd, saying the most random things. Anyway i did one run with him and tried to lose him but i couldn't. [View Full Entry]

I now find myself in a mountain town called Fernie, approximately 1800 kms since leaving the security of Whistler. Where to start? Instead of adopting a Canadian accept, I now find people mistaking me for an Australian as they have been swamping the hostels we've been staying in. Even an ex-pat from yorkshire who I was chatting to on a chairlift thought I was an aussie. Maybe it's a front to hide my english awkwardness, or to disguise my repressed english anger which comes out on the pool tables I've been winning out here. So this wouldn't be much of a [View Full Entry]

Whistler

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Whistler
Phil lent us his cell phone to use as an alarm as we are still travelling without a watch. We got up at 6.15, and Phil's best friend and colleague Paul picked us up a bit after seven. He was meeting some other Australian friends at Whistler so we were lucky to get a free trip up there. Some of the sights on the way up to Whistler were amazing, with bright blue sky as far as the eye could see. There was some roadside construction being conducted in preparation for the next Winter Olympics at Whistler in 2010. On arrival [View Full Entry]

Grouse Mountain

 North America » Canada
Phil woke us up early again to go into town with him. Big day today, our plans were to go up Grouse Mountain (gondola) and cross the Capilano suspension bridge - massive test for my fear of heights. There had been showers overnight and it was a little overcast when we got to the city. We caught the seabus across to Vancouver North, which was pretty cool. The clouds had cleared so we decided to do Grouse Mountain first. Our bus driver was a bit gruff and crazy, she drove fast and was looking at photos as she drove - she [View Full Entry]

A true snow angel if ever there was one !
The smallest chair lift.
Someone call the Kiwi fashion police.

Woke up and could hardly walk. I had fallen asleep the previous night with a bag of ice on my ankle but it hadn't seemed to have helped at all. But i was adamant a sore ankle wasn't going to deter me. So got ready and went into the village. Headed up Whistler mountain up the gondola. Another beautiful day. I strapped on my board and headed off. I was ok straight lining it or on my toe or heel edge, but as soon as i tried to turn the pain set in. I knew that i had been a bit [View Full Entry]
