A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Pine Lake
The lake is 7 kilometres long. Tom and Laura's cabin sits pretty much in the middle of it.
This weekend, we were headed off to Pine Lake. Luckily, our muscles weren't too sore after yesterday's hike up the mountain so the day started well. It was also gorgeous weather again so we have ben pretty lucky so far on that front. We got to the cabin early afternoon and proceeded to get on with the hard work- namely getting the chairs out and sitting around in the sun with some drinks. It's a tough life. It was so incredibly quiet out there. All you could hear was the sound of the water and some insects buzzing. Occassionally a boat [View Full Entry]

Gail packing up the car.
Sniff sniff sniff... I can smell french toast. Perhaps that’s because I ordered them and they are on the table before me smothered in maple syrup waiting to be tucked into! Gail ordered pan fried potatoes with an egg muffin with cheese. I have to say, I preferred my choice, although I am sure Gail’s tasted good. We sat having breakfast at Bell 2 watching the snow still falling and sporadically ringing our newly purchased Bear Bells, just in case any should come wandering into the restaurant trying to steal my delicious breakfast! We were having a relaxing morning as we [View Full Entry]

Gail and Lynda outside the SDA church in Smithers. Gail carrying the care package of food they gave us before we left.
We awoke to blazing sunshine and blue skies with puffy white clouds. We weren’t sure whether there was a church locally, but Gail managed to locate one on the internet a couple of minutes from the hostel, so we decided to have worship there rather than listen to a sermon online. The members were very warm and welcoming, comprising of a mixture of Canadians and First Nation people, and were extremely happy to have visitors. They remarked that it was seldom for them to have visitors as they were so far out of the way. The service finished at 11am and [View Full Entry]

Sunset Heights
Sunset Heights
This is where I went to elementary school. The kindergarten is in the building behind me.
I have a few hours before heading to the airport to fly to Paris. I still can't believe I'm going. It's been great to be here in Oshawa. Yesterday I did a little last minute shopping for sunscreen, socks, and a different pair of shoes. I decided the pair I had weren't going to make it across Europe and my socks were too thin. We went for a walk around the old neighborhood and down to the creek behind the old Elementary School. I also stopped in to Sunset Heights where I went to school to check out how it's changed.
