A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Lake Louise
Lake Louise
Still frozen and snowed over, so we couldn't get the Kodak moment like so many postcards have.
Lake Louise is supposed to be one of the most beautiful lakes in Alberta set in the Rocky Mountains. Sven has already been here before but thought it merited another look so we set off in that direction today. It's in the same direction as Banff, just further on. When we got there, the first thing we did was drive up to where the lake is and go for a walk. The weather that day wasn't so good and it was snowing up in the mountains as well. That is the first time it has snowed for us this year!! Unfortunately, [View Full Entry]

They sure do love the maple leaf here...
Waiting in the Frankfurt Airport after a long flight from Bangkok I was shifting from one uncomfortable position to another, drifting in between consciousness and unconsciousness, that twilight of being, where you aren't really asleep but you aren't really awake. Too weary to really think, half dreaming and half aware of the clatter of baggage wheels and shuffle of feet, the last calls for flights over the loud speaker jolted me at regular intervals, until somehow I manage to glide off into fitful snooze, though nothing even approaching the REM mode my mind and body so desperately need. Hi guys, hope you are well. Been a busy weekend in Kelowna, British Columbia, driving, playing cricket, watching hockey playoffs, playing cricket & DRIVING! Kelowna is aboot 744kms west of Calgary, with a population of about 150,000. It really has the feel of a small town rather that a big city, based in a very pretty valley around a very large lake. It only took us 9hrs to get here (inc a couple of food stops) on Friday night, got to the hotel around 2am (with the hour we gained crossing a timezone). The drive through the Rocky Mountains was unreal! [View Full Entry]

It seems that the unexpected has started happening before I even leave Toronto for Namibia. If you have the time, please read on as I would greatly appreciate feedback on where to go from here. See my profile above for the context of the internship. Last week I found out that the professor in charge of the internship had a heart attack and will be unable to accompany us to Namibia. This is very unfortunate for him, but also for the interns, as he would have been an AMAZING resource to have in designing and executing our research. As a result [View Full Entry]

When a kid smiles, she/he is truely smiling.
Moving to a new apartment with dad and his girlfriend is certainly an exciting change. But I’m astonishingly confused as I stand right in the middle of a room-full of garbage, and start to wonder how could I manage to live comfortably surrounded by these junks? “One’s waste might be other’s treasure.” My 10-years old little cousin Eric once told me this. Words of wisdom, take it. So I start to pack almost all my clothes, and run back and forth between home and children’s hospital donation box. Five times, I’ve successfully cleared everything and fo [View Full Entry]

Me

After our indulgent Rockies expedition, we spent the next 10 days leading a very simple, soulful and silent life, at the Vipassana Meditation Centre in Merritt. Liam has done this meditation course quite a few times and practices regularly, but for me, this was a first. It was a very unusual experience and one I welcomed with an open mind. I wont go through each day as they have somewhat blurred into one with the rigorous routine and I doubt that your stamina will permit a detailed account (no, no really, I understand). I have melded my experiences into one with [View Full Entry]

New to this blog idea. I will just start in by asking what is the "real world" to you? I have been travelling lately and when I get back to home base people always say the same thing, "Welcome back to the real world!" It brings up a great song from the early 80's from a band called Talk Talk, 'Life's what you make it'. If working low wage jobs and being too tired to contemplate anything after work besides staring blankly at an electrical hole in the wall(insert Survivor episode #576 here) is the real world, then I'd rather stick [View Full Entry]

It is so frustrating to not know where a loved one is and how they are doing. No blame on them, for a number of factors can interfere with proper communication; poor telephone system, non-existant internet, etc. Why can't we all have ESP damn it! Although i guess no one would have any secrets anymore. Might make for a better world in the long run. At least we'd get to the heart of our problems instead of bad communication. Like couples wouldn't fight over who left the remote in the wrong place when really what they are saying is I don't [View Full Entry]
