I have no idea yet how hard this will be to maintain on holidays but I am hopeful. 'Belle' [View Full Entry]

Golden Arch?
Golden Arch?
Golden Arch of Sudbury..guess what was across the street?
First 2% of driving is now behind us! We've arrived in the grand metropolis of Sudbury, safe and sound. No incidents (meaning no speeding tickets) to report. Saw our first wildlife just three hours into the trip. Had to slow down on the TransCanada to let a very slow, majestic, confused Moose find his way to the other side. (Not sure what he could find there that he did not have where he started from.) Traffic was very light, at some points it felt like we were the only ones on the road. Guess everyone else was at the cottage. Sightseeing [View Full Entry]

Packed and ready
Packed and ready
Let's go... and yes, the back seat is loaded too
It is finally here, we are officially on Vacation and driving to the West Coast! Truck is packed, gassed up and we've got our maps! We will travel 10,000 kilometers in three weeks, crossing five provinces and eight states! This web page will keep a record of where we've been, what we've seen and who we've met along the way. We'll meet up with friends and family along the way and will surprise one unsuspecting friend for her birthday! [View Full Entry]

7:20pm (PST) Had a little wine and cheese to get the trip started and then when we boarded the plane John became very excited b/c our seats resembled his green lay-z-boy days. Apparently, cheapo Air Cda bought the plane from Scandinavian airlines and if this is any indication of how Europe does things then we may never come back! Taking a Gravol now so John can have some peace and quiet and I can be well rested to try out my new accent. I've never been somewhere where I've had an accent. Soon we'll be foreigners. 10:30pm (PST) So I'm back! [View Full Entry]

Our resting place
Our resting place
When we drove in last night and saw this bog right beside our site, we thought we might be eaten alive, but so far we haven't seen any mosquitos.
We have enjoyed poking around Prince Rupert today. It’s a town of about 15,000, reminds both of us of small towns we have lived in. We were able to find a shoe repair place very quickly, and get my broken belly bag repaired. We were also able, finally, to replace that fresh crab dinner we had been looking forward to in Ucluelet - a nice seafood place in Cow Bay had half crab dinners for $13.95. Also had excellent chowder there! We’re catching up with our email at a nice little internet café called Java Dot Cup, and they charge only [View Full Entry]

Vanita being battened down
Vanita being battened down
The pack them in like sardines on the Queen of the North, but VERY CAREFULLY. Our neighbors to the right were taking a Harley from San Diego to Anchorage.
We rose at 4:30 to batten down Vanita, shower, and make our ferry connection to Prince Rupert. The day dawned grey and the sun remained hidden for the entire journey. By the middle of the afternoon, the clouds started to give off a steady drizzle, which lasted until the end of the day. It took them over an hour to load the ferry - a far cry from what we are used to on the southern routes. But they pack them in like sardines. The ferry was completely full; we figured it held about 150 vehicles, a few of which were [View Full Entry]

Lighthouse
Tour of the Bridge

We leave in 2 days but woke up to the sobering news that London was struck by terrorist attacks this morning. What (another) horrible tragedy and one that's shaken John and I into an uncomfortable state of vulnerability. Trying to get any relevant information re London from CNN is like trying to get a dog to meow but we're wading through all the press conferences and updates to keep on top of all developments. We've already had a call from one of John's friends to see if we're ok - he thought we were already there and that drove the reality [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Port Hardy
Welcome to Port Hardy
Port Hardy is a tiny town, but with beautiful carvings, such as this one.
After breakfasting with Maureen and Marcel, we left Parksville around 10 am, headed northward. We chose to take highway 19A almost as far as Campbell River, and really enjoyed meandering through tourist country along the water. The traffic was light, and we drove leisurely, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the oceanside communities between Parksville and Campbell River. While this is a prime tourist destination, it hasn’t been developed to the nth degree as so many places have these days. There is room for wildflowers to grow between the well-groomed gardens, and there is a casual friendliness in this area [View Full Entry]

Gay Pride Parade I can really feel the heat of summer. I can feel a lot of sweat trickle down my whole body. Is it hot in here or is it just the hotties on parade? (Hee hee) We weaseled ourselves into the crowded steets in Yonge for the Gay Pride Parade which was on its 25th year (please correct me if I'm wrong). There were gay people, gay couples, friends and families of gay people who were marching the streets of Toronto... either half-naked, naked-in-rollerblades, top naked, bottom half-naked... or what have you!!! Naked people everywhere... some of the spectators [View Full Entry]
