A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Prince Rupert
Prince Rupert
Black Rooster Hostel - View from the hostel.
We expected to awake to the sounds of lashing rain as we were in Prince Rupert, the place where we were informed that it rains and rains and rains. Everyone told us we better take our umbrellas as it will most definitely be raining! However, it was a glorious day, not too much blue sky, but still a great day for exploring Prince Rupert. Driving down a few blocks to the centre of PR, we parked the car and intended to view the museum, but they told us they were closing shortly for lunch and to come back after 1pm when [View Full Entry]

In one of the tourist guides that Tom and Laura had laid out for us to read about Canada, Brooks had received an excellent write-up. Apparently, it is a place filled with cultural and historical sights and is definitely not to be missed. Unfortunately, Sven already knows Brooks, one of his cousins lives there. When he read that report on Brooks, I think he almost fell off his chair in shock. To be fair, they kind of mis-lead you. Most of the things they talk about in the book are actually quite a way outside Brooks. Brooks itself seems to be [View Full Entry]

May 4th... seems like I should be boarding a plane today... I've spent the last few days getting ready, and after buying 5 bottles of sunscreen and 3 bottles of Purell, I figure I'm ready for whatever Africa wants to throw at me! My final Donation list is below, and it has filled two of the largest suitcases I could find... about 70lbs of donations coming with me, and another 40lbs coming with my mother in July. I have also raised $3735 for the school, which is over 8% of the cost of building the school. For those of you who [View Full Entry]

Hey, everyone So tonight is my last night in town. Crazy. I was told the weather in Burkina is super hot right now, and I made the mistake of checking online. HOLY CRAP is it ever hot there! The weather for the next couple of days looks something like this: Today: High 43, Low 28 Fri: High 42, Low 30 Sat: High 42, Low 37 You get the idea... I think it's safe to say I'm going to spend the next year in a constant state of SWEATY. Luckily for me, I went out yesterday and bought a whole bunch of [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone! I just thought I would welcome you all to my blog and tell you about my travel Plans - because now I have signed up for this and I am not travelling yet and so don't have anything to write about my travels yet! But I am leaving on Sunday morning for Vancouver where I will get on a ferry to go to Powell River where I will spend three weeks working with the National Youth Choir. I assume that since it would be impossible for us to sing for 24 hours a day, I will have a significant [View Full Entry]

Leaving Stewart
Leaving Stewart
Packing up the car in the rain.
We awoke to heavy mists lying low over the estuary hiding the beautiful mountain views and the rain had returned. The very thing the Canadian immigration lady was complaining about to us the day before when we remarked how lovely the weather was. We knew the locals would be complaining about how much they were fed up with the grey over cast days and the incessant rain they would want the sunshine and blue skies of the past two days back. After breakfast Liisa backed the car up close to the deck and I was able to load the suitcases in [View Full Entry]

Greetings, friends and/or relatives (and random readers, too) from accross the Earth's oceans. I have returned finally to do another journal before my head splits into many pieces after a huge cranial explosion. Ive experienced too much, well seen too much, at least and I need to get it down in typage before I lose it forever. Ive come close to buying a note pad and jotting shit down... maybe I should but these decisions are hard to make... I find it much easier typing so without crying too much I better get started. Im sitting here in Washington DC, The [View Full Entry]
