A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Breathtakingly set amidst mountains and sea, Vancouver is definitely one of the most naturally picturesque cities I’ve ever visited. I’m here presenting at a conference and thus was holed up at the hotel for the past 2 days. With much relief the presentation went well, informative albeit humorless. Saturday morning I was able to escape the confines of the symposium hotel and did one of the things I enjoy most about traveling…wandering around alone. Like a homing pigeon I found Davie St, which (judging from the lampposts festooned by rainbow banners and the store windows di [View Full Entry]

Well, it's one way of getting the calves into the right pen! They're too stupid to make it in there on their own!
On Friday evening, we all got in Tom's truck and headed East into the lone Prairie again. This time, we were headed for Medicine Hat, home of the worlds largest teepee. This place is known as "gas city"- because it sits on a big bubble of natural gas. It is also, unexpectedly, the sunniest city in Canada according to the website! I'll just take their word for it. Medicine Hat doesn't look that far away on a map, but it is right near the border to Saskatchewan and it took over 3 hours to get there. It's a long way- Canada [View Full Entry]

The night before leaving Vancouver, we invited our friends to join us at the Yaletown Brew Pub for a final farewell. It was great to see everyone together, but sad to say goodbye. Here are some photos from that evening, and some other ones of the good times spent with our great mates! We love you guys! [View Full Entry]

Port Hardy
Port Hardy
Arriving at Port Hardy.
The night chugged slowly for me as I didn’t sleep well (although Gail said she slept well), heard the ship dock at some place to unload passengers and supplies at a tiny port in the passage, then at 3:30 am we hit open water and the bucking of the ship started in earnest. Luckily though I didn’t feel nauseous this time. It was reassuring to reach the open waters though as the chances of us running into rocky ground were much slimmer! Even so, just in case of emergency, our clothes and shoes were strategically placed and ready to be donned [View Full Entry]

Prince Rupert
Prince Rupert
Ferry Loading
The rain was falling softly when we awoke to mist covered hills once again. The weather didn’t look particularly inviting for a sail down the infamous Inside Passage to Port Hardy, the northern most town on Vancouver Island. Still we have been blessed by good weather so far, so why should today be any different? It was with trepidation we boarded the Queen of Prince Rupert this morning, as the ferry we were supposed to take, The Queen of the North, sank six weeks ago during the night travelling down the Inside Passage killing two! We only heard about the sinking [View Full Entry]
