A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Oh MY God...this has started off as the worst trip ever! This is even worse than when I was quantined in Vancouver after my flight from Tokyo. Have had my first experience with lost luggage, and the terror that it brings on. I mean, to be fair, I shouldn't really have been too concerned, because everything that I really needed was in Rannoch and Karen's anyway, but still...how hard is it to look for luggage? And what's with the driver telling me that "It's not my problem!" and just driving off?? Umm...excuse me??? YOU have lost MY luggage, but it's not [View Full Entry]

Riley Park
Riley Park
Riley Park is aboot 4 blocks from home, full of cricketers, AFL, and frisbees...
Yep, Moore Ct WK bowled some tricky bloody left arm quick Indian dude for 5. Now relying on injuring one of my fellow teammates in the "Grid" to maintain a position in the team. Reckon pushing one of the older blokes to exhaustion might create 1 or 2 soft tissue injuries... The Cavs were rolled for just 120 in 40 overs in our opening match of the year. A lively pitch against a pretty good bowling attack had us in trouble early. This tricky bloody Indian swung half a dozen in and then suckered me with the seamer going the other [View Full Entry]

Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3... so Leanne and I, Janice, are here in Dunrobin, Ontario, for the month of may while we prep for the big trek. I think my legs have been in a semi-spaghetti state all week getting used to biking everyday! Our date of departure is May 30th to Vancouver with dear papa in tow. He will join us through the mountains until Calgary. This is a trek of a lifetime for us all, Leanne has been dreaming it up since highschool, and we greatly thank anyone who has helped us or will help us along the way. [View Full Entry]

After all of my travels, I've realized that my interest in a particular country or culture dramatically increases with a visit to that destination. With that in mind, I've decided to embark on a quick one month jaunt to Greece & Turkey (and make the most of my Classics/Classical Archaeology minor of my undergraduate degree). My fellow journey-er will be Janice, a former roommate (from last year's dig in Italy) and friend from Ottawa who recently got her MA in Classical Archaeology from the U of A. Our goal is to hit up many-a-beaches and great archaeological sites (on the [View Full Entry]

Birds Eye View
Birds Eye View
Toronto from the CN Tower
On the 2 hour bus from St Thomas to Toronto I marveled at the number of flags flapping along the way. At first sporadic appearances were made but as we drew nearer to Toronto they multiplied in number and size, the mighty maple leaf waving hello at me, in case I forgot for a moment where I was. About 30 minutes outside the city I started keeping count, reaching 37 flags in 15minutes. By then this game was getting a little boring so I struck up a conversation with Jim. Upon my probing, Jim replied this nationalistic zeal comes from a [View Full Entry]

My Chariot Awaits

Well, it has been an extremely eventful 2 days! (I cannot believe that it has only been 2 days since I met these people...). I will start at the beginnning and if I get bored then I will just skip to the interesting parts! So my flight arrived in Vancouver at 11:11am, right on time, and the choir was supposed to meet at the Statue of Haida Gwaii or something at 2:45. I didn't know what I would do for 3.5 hours while I waited so I thought first I would find the statue so that I wasn't panicking that I [View Full Entry]

May 9th, 2006 We have been home for more than 2 weeks from our 105 day world cruise It is wonderful to be home We had planned this long trip for 3 years and to me it was a privilege to be able to travel to wonderful destinations, learn about people, cultures and the history of different nations and continents. Between Holland America’s Barbara, our friends the Branigan’s and Howard, we learned how to travel safely, efficiently and enjoyably. We met congenial people from all over the world, which we hope we will see again- Ella, think Canadian Thanksgiving, Vicky, after [View Full Entry]

On May 8th I flew home to see my family in Ontario. Dom stayed in Vancouver for one more week, to tie up any loose ends like the final sale of our condo and jeep. My sister Ashley was getting married on May 21st, so I was able to spend that time helping her with the final preparations, and throw her a wedding shower and bachelorette party. It was really nice to be home for a good amount of time, and since I was still waiting to hear about the job with Emirates, the time at home was indefinite. Ashley married [View Full Entry]

Hello Yawl, Had some primo powder on tuesday... about 20cms of freshies. Was very cool and somewhat unexpected at this time of year. I (jim) had the worst day of work the other day... digging a hole for 6.5 hours, a well earned beer was consumed in the afternoon sun afterwork which quickly erased the painful memory. xoxo [View Full Entry]
