A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. In Toronto...

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto
Staying at a distant family's house. Orientation tomorrow. I'm nervous. Should have brought my jeans. What I failed to realise was that most of the YCI volunteers live in Toronto so they aren't literally living on the contents of their backpacks. Tomorrow, I'm going to wear the same thing that I wore today because I really don't want to do laundry. GRR. Also, while I am in my outdoor sandals and easily washable but fugly cutoffs, they're going to be in nice jeans and tshirts. I was going to bring freaking jeans. GR. all in all though, nothing too exciting. [View Full Entry]

Bird report for North West Pacific Coast, May 2006 As we approach 250 species on our North American bird list, it is becoming more difficult to find “new” species, especially as we have been in coastal habitat for most of the past 6 weeks. Outlined below are some of the wildlife highlights we have experienced on our travels north through Oregon, Washington, and Vancouver Island, not an exhaustive list of birds seen. Ospreys and Bald Eagles have been seen almost daily, as have Common Loons. Other exciting sea and estuary birds have been Caspian Terns, Pigeon Guillemots, Re [View Full Entry]

The last time I was in Ottawa, I was in high school attending the government-sponsored Encounters with Canada program. Funny though, I almost feel like a high school student again as I squint my glasses against the sunshine and its rays reflect off of the metal wire of my retainer. Perhaps karma has come full circle as I had previously pitied adults who had to wear retainers. Now, the retainer gods chose to adorn me with this resin and wire contraption shortly before embarking on my trip. I think to confirm my theory that I bring heavy rains with me each [View Full Entry]

We have just finished our second day at a takeaway Sri Lankan restaurant stall - James as chef and Julie as cashier girl (putting our education to fine use). James has mastered the art of making samosas and fried rice, plus some other menu items and Julie just stands up the front and takes orders. Our boss thinks we're the bee's knees and wants us to stay and manage the place - she also said that the Bellingham team can officially start up our own Sri Lankan takeaway joint in New Zealand!! We just smiled and silently thought that would be [View Full Entry]

Traveling into town you note that, for a country area, the roads are wide. They're as wide as highways, built to carry heavy vehicles, those used in both agriculture and industry. The flat farmland with it's farmhouses and fields that are either full of wheat or sprouting with the first seasons corn give way to a more urban environment as the endless flat expanse is gradually broken up by buildings. Walmart looms huge and inviting, competing with Canadian Tire, offering convenient all-in-one shopping with everything from groceries to clothes to furniture to gardening equipment to whatever else [View Full Entry]

Road trippin'

North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary
Today we start a new part of the trip. Sven’s parents had booked an RV for 4 people while they were still in Canada and had decided that they wanted to go and see Victoria Island while they were out here, so Sven and I decided to go along for the ride. We went to pick up the RV yesterday only to find out that Sven’s parents had made the same mistake as us back in Thailand, namely turned up one day early!! Well, the woman at the RV place was really nice and said that we could see which one [View Full Entry]
