A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. Hello there. Well 27 days til my trip starts. But it has already started, with the anual May 24 camping/fishing trip. This year we're going just south west of North Bay, On. Nice remote lake and we got a spot camping on a sweet island. Anyways this is my first entry so I guess I should expand on exactly where I"m going. I fly to amsterdam on June 16th and have a 2 month unlimited eurorail pass. The plan is Belgium, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, possibly Hungary/Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal. My buddy Jordan flies out of Paris [View Full Entry]

One of the sights we encountered on the way to Tofino.
We arrived in Tofino yesterday. Tofino is about one third of the way up the island on the coast of the west side. It’s a really small town that I suppose mostly lives of tourists when it’s the high season in the summer. We chose a campsite just outside of town that was almost directly on the beach. You literally just had to walk down a small path and you got to the sand. It was such a nice day that we had a quick lunch outside and then went down on to the beach for a long walk. Tofino is [View Full Entry]

Today a simple walk in a canyon didn't go as well as planned. For starters, the multiple forks in the trail helped us find our own canyon and not quite the one we intended. When we came to dead end (a cliff) we decided to descend and call it a day... but with the extra excitement of sliding down the river bed! This was James' great idea which did not go so well for me (non-coordinated Julie). Rather than jumping the rock pool at the end of the slippery slope, I landed right in it and twisted my ankle. If it [View Full Entry]

It may be Stockholm Syndrome but Toronto isn't really that bad. ...it's quite alright ...it's kind of awesome. Today, I went through this walking subway thing. Basically they've got like a whole city under the ground sans the apartments. And it basically has a 20 - 30 block span (I'm totally making that number up but it is seriously BIG). It's freaking amazing. I think the government should construct apartments and condos down there. I would totally live there. PLUS, it would double as Toronto's underground bomb haven if ever we got nuked. Man, I'm so jealous. I'm forever rooting for [View Full Entry]

That name just cracks me up.
My time in Montreal was short. Jean-Luc, Janice's boyfriend, drove us there from Ottawa. Montreal is a crazy city to navigate by car. Janice, who's from Ottawa and has been frequently to montreal would rather drive in Toronto. The roads were built around existing Montreal. Some highways were built below ground level and some off-ramps are on the left hand side. Insiders tip: stay in the left lane to avoid driving past your exit! We spent Sunday afternoon touring around the Old Port and Old town. It was a quaint area paved with cobblestones. It didn't rain on us suprisingly. There [View Full Entry]

Thoughts of Vancouver tend to conjure up a whirlwind of emotions. Like many cities world round it is surely a fountain of good and a haven for nasty. A bittersweet, tragically beautiful city, I love both for the character it adds and the fun to be had. A strange vibe surrounds downtown Vancouver as if to accustom its visitors to the rigors of inner city living without any of the stress. Vancouver drivers are quite possibly some of the most patient relaxed drivers on the planet, I know for sure that I would have been run down many times over if [View Full Entry]

No summer in Vancouver this year!
There are 16 days left until Danielle and I jump on a plane, and meet with Carolyn in London to start our travels around Europe in June and July. August will have Carolyn and I road tripping across Canada from Halifax to Vancouver. Our departure date is May 31, and we have tons to do until then. I find I'm doing something travel-related with almost all of my spare time between jobs, whether it's visiting doctors, picking up last minute things, or writing down as much info as possible from the travel books going back to the library. The current Europe [View Full Entry]

Yep, this is the last time I will be updating my cricket progress because I am making none! Ab Moore Ct Sneaky Keeper LEAVING a ball outside off stump for 8... Don't leave the ball and get caught behind you idiot. Changing to plan II (The Huss-enator approach) which involves the aerial route straight back over the bowlers head, having seen some of the catching I will back myself! Cavs are 0 and 2 despite being a better team, check out the link if interested... http://www.sportstatz.com/ss/linkreport.asp?club=233&mode=100&match=650 http://www.sportstatz.com/ss/linkreport.asp?club=233&m [View Full Entry]
