A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995. We arrived back in Calgary a day early so we had a nice day to relax and organise a hire car for the rest of the time here before we had to drop off the RV this morning. On the way there, we picked up the hire car with one small hitch- the tire had a big gash in it so we had to go back and get a new one. But apart from that everything ran smoothly. The rest of the day was free to do whatever we wanted so we decided to take Sven’s parents to the shopping centre [View Full Entry]

Vancouver

 North America » Canada
Downtown Vancouver The first thing that struck me about this place, having just left bustling, dirty Latin American cities, was how clean and quiet it was. You can barely hear the electric cars as they cruise down the street and if you step on to the road in front of them, rather than beeping at you and swerving so as not to damage their car, they stop and let you cross the road. What a change. The Trolley Company After 6 months of travelling I arrived in this city with enough money to check into the cheapest hostel I could find [View Full Entry]

PRIMA TAPPA

Offroadin
Offroadin
A little work to get to this lake. Gravel road then a muddy snowmobile trail.
Wow, so the camping trip this weekend was more than we bargained for. Our site was an island in the middle of a channel in a very large lake. None if any coverage from the elements. We had 90km/h winds, rain, fog, hail, thunder and lighting, SNOW, and 4 hours of glorious sunshine. It was a rough go. Fishing wasn;t the best either. Only 4 caught. Almost got lost in the pitch black after picking up Josh and Rob. Our GPS died, but luckily we had spare batteries. Sorta scary when all u have is a pink line and a little [View Full Entry]

Hey y'all, Hows everyone doing? O.k, so heres the update so far.... After spending the first week chilling out with my mates Rich, Kev, and Carl in Vancouver, going to a huge park called Stanley Park, drinking, eating out and general kicking back and enjoying Canada, we headed to Vancouver Island through the gulf islands via ferry and onto Victoria (the capital) where the boys are from. Their high school was celebrating its 100th year, so was hosting an all american (!!!) weekend of 'socker', bbq, beer gardens, tour around the school. A very strange affair I have to admit. My new home
The town of Banff, or part of it..
Started looking for work on the monday and had a job at a new restaurant in town by the Tuesday but ended up taking a job at The Banff Centre, a big function and conference type place up near Tunnel Mountain. Im working as a food and beverage server and the perks are great, with $5 accommodation per night, free meals when working, cheap gym etc etc. My flat mate is from Toronto and she is great. Most of the workers here are Canadian which makes a nice change from all the Aussies in most of Banff. Loads of the people [View Full Entry]

The Bow River, Banff
Banff Town
The Banff Centre

So today we decided to make the most of the fact that we were staying in the wine growing region of Canada by going wine-tasting. It’s a good thing that Sven’s dad doesn’t drink wine so he can drive us drunkards around. It’s not like in most countries here where you have to be part of a tour group to get into the vineyards. You can just drive up and taste their wine, for free. Perfect. We drove up to the first place and tasted about 4 wines. We bought one bottle there before heading on to the next place and [View Full Entry]

Capilano Suspension Bridge
Capilano Suspension Bridge
One of the longest suspension bridges I've ever been.
We spent the morning around Vancouver today opting to go and see the Capilano suspension bridge. It is a fairly famous suspension bridge hanging over a deep valley with a river at the bottom. Quite scary if you are afraid of heights I guess. Sven’s mum is afraid of heights but we told her she had to go over this time. Apparently, last time they were there she refused to go over. It really wasn’t so bad and you weren’t allowed to rock it too badly or anything. There were guards sitting in small towers at each end ready to jump [View Full Entry]

Live Animals!

Vancouver was on the agenda for today. We went to the local shopping centre to pick up some groceries and found that it didn’t even open until midday so seeing as we didn’t want to hang around for that long, we just headed off into town. We grabbed a bus into town and did pretty much split up right away to go our separate ways. Sven and I did the usual wandering around, just having a look at the town and stopping for a drink before we had to meet Sven’s parents again. We had a quick lunch and then went [View Full Entry]
