If you've ever traveled abroad then you know one of the easiest ways to identify a Canadian is to look for the Canadian flag sewn on their backpack. Sure, at first glance Canada may seem to resemble the country it shares a common border with, but don't be mistaken. This country is quick to distinguish itself from its American neighbor and you might even say Canada is a little friendlier, a little more laid back and, of course, a lot colder. For starters, this cosmopolitan country has two official languages, French and English. And then there's the province of Quebec, considered to be unique in culture with cities like Montreal and Quebec City that boast a rare European old world meets modern metropolis fusion that's unseen anywhere else in North America. Canada also has a reputation for being a tolerant and even peaceful society - except when it comes to hockey! The country is known for its gay-friendly immigration laws and legalization of same-sex marriage. And as a highly developed nation rich in natural resources, Canadians enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where the country is generous in providing its citizens with social services, most notably, universal healthcare.

Canada has an abundance of lakes so getting around the country is likely to include a ferry trip at some point. Otherwise, traveling by car can offer a spectacular opportunity to experience Canada's natural beauty. Various scenic drives cut through Canada's wilderness and allow the nature loving traveler to stop along the way to hike, camp, fish and spot wildlife - even Moose or Grizzly. If you still want to stay active but don't wish to take your chances with the wildlife, then cycling one of Montreal's many bike paths is another great option. British Columbia also has stunning national parks and exciting cities. If you head to Vancouver, keep your eyes open for celebrities. Behind LA and New York City, Vancouver is third in entertainment TV and film production. The city is also host to the 2010 winter Olympic games.

Highlights

 • Yukon Take the Yukon wildlife scenic route and explore rivers, trails, wildlife and more. The highway connects the US to Alaska via Canada.
 • Vancouver , British Columbia Home of the 2010 winter Olympics, visit Grouse Mountain, just 15 minutes outside of Vancouver. The mountain has year-round activities including skiing, ice skating, paragliding and mountain ziplines.
 • Niagara Falls; Ontario See the Great Lakes and the majestic Niagara Falls
 • Quebec Culturally and architecturally rich Francophone province in Canada

CORRECTION TO YESTERDAY’S BLOG: I received a kind comment on the blog from a person who clearly knows his “fauna” better than I. The comment informs me that the five “moose” I described (and took a photo of) are actually “elk”. I have every reason to believe that he’s right because, when it comes to members of the “venison” family (and many other families), I don’t know what I’m talking about. Thank you for the clarification! It rained last night but had stopped by morning, so I hit the road with the top down (as us [View Full Entry]

QANTAS Flight QF11 Flight on an A380 from Australia to Vancouver - sounds like a fantastic flight. Well, the majority was. Flyed from Brisbane to Sydney and the flight went well. The Transit Lounge to go from Domestic to International was like cattle call really. Humans stuffed in a room waiting to be called onto a truck, oh I mean bus. We got on quickly though as our flight was being asked to Go To Gate. This took us round the glamorous behind the scenes of Sydney airport. We even went right past our A380 and went through many extended renos [View Full Entry]

So this is what Tom-Tom screen should look like when functioning normal.
So as Penny had hurt her left calf whilst at Nelson & Karens place she could not go travelling to Sth America; India & Africa. It was almost 3 weeks were she could not walk so therefore there was no way that she could carry her backpack & go trekking around the world. So as an alternative, we bought a Ford Explorer 4WD and decided to drive to the east coast of Canada then out to the west where we will finally settle down in Vancouver. So on the 25th August we drove from Toronto where Scotts parents live to Montreal [View Full Entry]

This little fellow popped his head up as I was walking to the beach. Split second photo's while you're walking tend to turn out blurry when you're in a hurry...but there is a fox in there!
We went into a tourist information centre in Nova Scotia just across the border of New Brunswick where one of the lady’s told us we should go to PEI ( Prince Edward Island ) via The Confederation Bridge as it is an experience you wouldn’t want to miss. So we jumped in the vehicle and headed towards the 12 mile long bridge. The bridge is actually the largest bridge in the world that runs over ice. It still has mixed emotions with the locals who live on the island as now it opens up their little island for everyone where [View Full Entry]

Sulphur Mountain
Sulphur Mountain
view from 2281m on Banff
The past few days we've been cut off from civilization. No internet. So here is an update what we've been doing since the arrival in the Kiska Inn B&B in Dead Man's Flats. Banff and around was on our todo list. The first thing we did was to take the gondola up sulphur mountain (2281m) which gives a nice view on Banff and on several other summits of mountains. The upper terminal looks like something from an old James Bond movie (quote Lonely Planet) and has the expected restaurant with awful coffee. I made a panorama photo using my tripod and [View Full Entry]

The shot everybody takes at Lake Louise
We did a serious hike at Lake Louise in Banff national park. The lady at the information centre thought that we looked tough and proposed to us a nice but long hike. Actually it was a combination of two hikes. We began by walking to the tea house at Lake Agnes, this was a steep climb with an elevation gain of 385m. We had tea with scones and continued with a side trip to a rock (Big Beehive) with an additional elevation gain of 135m. Then we went down an esimated 400m and went up again 250m to the second tea [View Full Entry]

Wow, look at the reflection, who needs Lake Louise
This day (tuesday 15th) we first had to do some errants as we were out of almost everything and you gotta eat. So, we went to the local supermarket "Sobeys" in Golden. Our muscles surprisingly didn't ache that much so we felt good enough to do some less streneous hikes. We drove back to Yoho National park to Emerald Lake and had a nice relaxed walk around it. The first half part we walked through rain forest and there were some spectecular mirror views on the lake. The lake gets it color from light reflecting off the fine glacial rock particles. Well I didn't stay in Vancouver too long. The hostel was great and the people were nice but as soon as that ended and i was on the street things just started going crazy. The evening after my stay at the hostel was rainy and cold, I caught Pneumonia that night and am still sick from it. After that night the day following was rainy and cloudy for most of the morning and by the after noon it was starting to get sunny again. I set out with my friend to ask for change on Granville street and two ladies asked [View Full Entry]

Not sure if he was “Shoal Fishing”, but just to show you that even experienced fishermen get in trouble here.
